Just installed solderless Xentium. Went to boot up the xbox for the first time and the Xenium OS screen came up and everything was looking good. I set up the retail kernel as is shown in the guide and then hit A to launch it. The xbox rebooted but then just sat at a black screen with the DVD light blinking green. If I pust the DVD button the light blinks orange. I tried rebooting and then launching the retail kernel multiple times but the same thing always happens. Getting the Xenium OS up is not a problem. I have reseated the chip several times and there is no difference in behavour. If I take the chip out, everything works perfectly. I have tried resetting all defaults, and locking the harddrive after loading the retail kernel. Nothing seems to work. No matter which button I push to turn it on the green light is always on on the chip, also it will not read the DVD, but instead go directly to Xenium, or a black screen. Xbox version 1.4 or 1.5. I really appreciate ANY help on the matter.
Also, if it matters, if I choose Recovery it goes to a what I assume to be a recovery boot screen and just hangs.
Is it absolutely necessary to load the retail kernel?
Thanks

Will it boot to the retail kernel if you pull out the chip?
what is the LED status on the chip, is it red?
your TSOP might be shot?

You only need the retail kernel if you plan on playing Xbox Live.. but if u just want to use homebrew stuff, then it's not necesary.

just follow this.. your not the first one to have this prob...

Yes to the first question, it works perfectly if I remove the mod chip and the light is green when it is on. Secondly, I never plan on playing LIVE. I did manage to flash to evox and am currently working towards the dashboard. If I manage to get the dashboard working, is there a problem with the time and date? I will be moving the xbox around quite a bit.
Thank you very much for the prompt replies!!! As you can see, I am very new to the mod scene, but am fortunate enough to be very familiar with computers and networks.

like smack blitz said, it's not necessary to boot the Retail Kernel, but is a good idea to have that option. what version of Xos are you running? A woud try to reflash to the latest version of it, and if you runninf it reflash it anyway.

I am running 2.0.1. Being as new to this as I am, I will prob just run evox dashboard and bios for a long time until I am more comfortable with changing settings. My main concern now are the warnings I read about setting the time and date.
Thanks again for the responses!

dude...get the newest Xenium OS. it won't fix your problems, but you should update anyway.
-
ya i thot they fixed the time/date problem from the 1.0 version (red bubly skin). Just upgrade to the 2.3.0 version, and you won't have the problem with the time.
actully 2.0.1 is fine too. even if u move the system alot.

if you could try this flash the BIOS of choise and get the Slayer 2.6 auto loader, and reformat your HDD to factory defualt. then load the Retail Kernel lock your hdd the try to boot it.

I had this issue on one system, but the problem was the hard drive believe it or not. If youve upgraded your hdd, try putting in the stock hdd to see if the issue goes away. Unless of course you are already using the stock hdd ;)

don't add the retail kernel using the "TSOP" location. (Launch menu > add item)
get a hold of the version of M$ bios that corresponds with your xbox, then add it as if it's a hacked bios. If you try to add the retail kernel from the onboard one, you run the risk of killing the TSOP. Just do what i said, don;t run the risk. My xbox is useless without the chip coz my TSOP is gone.....
read the link that i posted before this

THANK YOU ALL !!! I have learned so much in the past 24 hours! I have managed to find bioses and I am going to start from scratch....i.e. updating the OS, installing a bios and dashboard, and upgrading the harddrive. I really appreciate each and every response I will let you know how things turn out over the weekend.
By the way, as far as just using backup games and connecting via FTP, the original problem was overcome by just installing evox bios.
I hope this tread can help another newbie in the future!
