Title: Upgrading Your Modchip Ram
Post by: Bwsk8 on October 29, 2004, 10:53:00 AM
I have tons of 16mb ram chips laying around I wanted to know if I could replace the 2mb ram chip on my xenium with a 16mb one?  This probally wouldnt be possible though because of the os and the backup os.

The memory on a modchip isn't RAM, it is ROM.

LMAO if the chip had ram, then every time you turned off the chip it would lose its flash since ram is volatile memory.  That doesn't sound good now does it?

Contemporary versions of ROM allow some limited rewriting (referred to as a flash update, as well as the dynamic side of the ROM, which can be written to by the OS), so you can usually upgrade firmware such as the BIOS by using installation software. Rewritable ROM chips include PROMs (programmable read-only memory), EPROMs (erasable read-only memory), EEPROMs (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory), and a common variation of EEPROMs called "flash memory".

Contemporary versions of ROM

FEPROM *cough*

QUOTE
ROM was literally "read-only"

ROM = Read Only Memory

FEPROM = Flash Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory or Flash ROM

While it *may* be possible, I doubt it would ever work. For one, I bet the OS is only designed to work with 2MB of total space... Second, your Flash ROM from your MP3 player is most likely  entirely different in terms of interface, etc. Plus... why would you want to? Once BFM support is added to XOS2, you can effectively have as many BIOSes as you can fit on your HDD...

I have a feeling you will be waiting a few years for BFM support.

OMG, are people really quoting me because I only said "ROM". Geez, I was in a hurry, we all know it is Flash ROM...

The point is that RAM won't work  jester.gif

And... no, XeniumOS is restricted to 2mb flashspace (for now anyways).
