Well a boot disc that works on one xbox may not work on another !  What speed did you burn the image at ? cdrw or dvd-r ?

DVD-R at 1X is the best bet , it should boot on any working drive. If you have access to another xbox then swap the dvd-rom while you install a dashboard.

You can't ftp untill you get a alternate dashboard booting either from disc or hard drive.
