try just connecting the xbox and hard drive and turning it on. A lot of chips will say "this hard drive isn't formatted for xbox, do you want to" and you just say yes and you go from there. If not, you can grab a copy of xboxHDM and setup a new xbox HDD and put the applicable boot files etc on it.
