The box must be a 1.6b. Flashbios can cause the exact symptoms you describe with a 1.6b. Flick the bank switch and flash via the Cromwell bank or if you can get the flash bios screen back up flash with a 512k hacked bios from there. Make sure you flash over the flashbios bank which ever method you use. The problem will be gone once flashbios is gone. This used to be common.
