Title: Matrix Mode Switches

OK, i put two toggle switches on my matrix so i could mode select, and i hooked a female "headphone jack" in with the ground for the two switches, and i have a male end with the two wires connected.So basiclly when the males end is in, the switches change the mode, but when its out, they do nuthin. The problem is, both switches on the chip,have to be off, mode 4,for it the external switches to work, so its in mode 4 when the male end is unplugged. Anyway- is there a way that i could rewire it to be in mode 1,test mode, much safer for little kids use,without the male "headjack" being in, without  tearing apart my chip?
