Title: Problem Programming Chameleon
Post by: shavedrat on March 12, 2004, 07:50:00 PM
It seems that although there are faqs about flashing the Chameleon/Matrix chips, a lot of people are still having problems.

First off, get a fresh new 9 volt (alkaline) battery.  Place it in your programmer.  I used a Duracell. Works great.

Secondly, attach your mod chip to the programmer. On a Matrix chip, place it in bank 1.  On a Chameleon it shouldn't matter.
Make sure you don't place it on the programmer backwards.

Thirdly, your choice of computer in which you are going to use to flash your chip matters. Some motherboards simply DO NOT work with the matrix programmer.

I have tried on 2 AMD motherboards, my AMD K6 (380 mhz) and my AMD K7 (1100 mhz).  Both computers would have a lot of trouble recognizing my programmer and would never successfully flash the chip. STAY AWAY FROM AMD MOTHERBOARDS.

I tried on 2 pentiums and have had mixed results.  On the first Pentium (800 mhz) motherboard, I applied the chip to the programmer, loaded it into my computer, opened xp.exe and tada! it flashed first try.  On the other Pentium (133 mhz), the problems began to set in.  My programmer would not be recognized.  Upon applying sufficient pressure to the chip onto the programmer, xp.exe would finally recognize that something was in fact connected.  When I continued on to the flashing process, more errors would come along.  Upon once again squeezing the chip onto the programmer and getting a good connection, the chip flashed successfully; although I had to squeeze during the entire flashing process otherwise it would get an error and I would have to restart.  The programmer did not need pressure into the motherboard, only the chip and programmer need a tight contact.

I have tried on 2 Celeron motherboards as well.  One of them reacted like the AMD and NEVER managed to work. The other had the squeezing problem but did manage to flash in the end.

When plugging your programmer into the computer's printer port, it should not matter whether the computer is on or off.  However, NEVER place or remove the chip from the programmer while the programmer is plugged into the computer.  Also, do not plug your programmer into another device (eg. external cd-burner) or via a cable. Place it directly into the computer's motherboard.  Doing otherwise could damage your programmer/chip.

For flashing the Chameleon or the Matrix, use XP.exe. It can be downloaded here (linked from Easybuy2000)

The matrix programmer is very picky and a chip that won't flash is usually just due to the programmer's incompatibility with motherboards.  Anyone having trouble should probably go straight to finding a different computer to flash on.  If after trying several Pentiums you are still unable to flash, even with squeezing, try out another battery.  Most likely your programmer or chip are NOT dead, it may just take some patience to find a computer that actually works.

These are just my personal experiences, yours may vary. (Hell some of you may even manage to flash a chip on an AMD!)
