It's a good thing you asked because if you would have moved the HDD to the new console it would have rendered it useless if it was locked. You fierst have to unlock it with the original motherboard. Other than that all you have to do it unscrew the chip and take it out!
But you know that if the new Xbox is a version 1.5 you will have to do some soldering to get it up and running.

OK, I need to check the motherboard version, but it is probably not a 1.0 or a 1.1 (which is what I need for solderless Matrix right?)
How about this: can I swap the DVD drives without any problems. Take the Sammy out of the new one, swap it for the Thomson in the old one, without much effort? Will that work, or do I need to do something special to get an xbox to accept a new DVD drive?
That way I just leave the Matrix and the HDD on the same mobo and not worry about it...
