Ok, so i'm getting Xbox live for Christmas and I'm making sure that all i have to do is put the game in and start playing. I have setup my box to boot to yboxdash.xbe, leaving the original dashboard intact. My matrix is in Mode three but when i load a game and push eject (to disable the mod) it goes to a screen that says my Xbox needs service. I can access the M$ dash via evo-x so i don't think that's it. Do i need to relock my hard drive before this will work? and if I successfully accomplish this will i be ready for live and not need to worry about being banned?

Yes you NEED to relock your hard drive to even boot from the xbox bios. (yes mode 3)
and .. I don't know if this is the case.. but..
What I do and I do this for everyone I install that wants xbox live..
I am not sure if going to the xbox dashboard WHILE the mod chip is ON when you have a UPDATED xbox live dashboard (one that live updates)
We are not sure if this bans you or not. so we make it so that the link in evox dashboard does NOT go to the xbox dash. if you want the xbox dash reboot so that the xbox bios is ON not the chip.
The real way to get banned is PROBABLY just clicking xbox live tab with mod chip ON. (basically trying to actually log on and logging on with modchip on is what bans you )
I don't know which way.. so we just make it so you can't load xbox dash THROUGH evox because the chip would be on.
But yes you are right... lock your hard drive and you will not get that error anymore.
and everything will work

Ok, i can load the M$ dash through evo-x but if i do that and then hit eject, the LED on the modchip turns red, meaning that it has been disabled. Can i then not assume that it's safe to go live?

one thing on this on/off thing.
if i boot my game with the matrix off, the xbox logo should be green again right??
i haven't got my chip yet, still waiting by the door, but im just checking.

If by green you meen the original M$ bios then the answer is yes.
Unless you flashed the TSOP bios.
