Title: General Hardware FAQ
Post by: tritium6 on January 03, 2004, 07:49:00 AM
About defragging xbox drive - I seem to recall reading something about XFAT not fragmenting files. In that case, a format wouldn't help your problems. How would MS expect users to defrag HDD after years of use anyway. Maybe you are overheating or experiencing some other performance loss.

After buying Xbox 2 days ago now searching all thru Hamburg stores in order to find one with Samsung - mine unfo was with Thomson. Been advised that December builds supposingly shud come with Samsung and TOSHIBA (allegedly some MS salesman confirmed this to Karstadt people). Now curious to wait till next week when December builds supposed to come - then will change mine for a new one with sammy or toshiba, and away with this Tommy f**k ! biggrin.gif

Anyone heard about Toshiba DVDs in Xbox ??????

dink: can you post what bios's you have used and the results (which ones recognize the extra RAM ok).  From what I have read, the x2 bios's work fine, but have you (or anyone else) tried using a evox bios?

TIA.

Xecuter2 BIOSes (4876, 4977, 4978, 4979 and 4980) enables the extra 64 meg of memory.

Evox M6 and M7 do NOT enable the extra 64 meg of memory.

Here is a list of BIOS's, that DO support 128 meg.  Hopefully, this feature can be added to the BIOS comparision chart on XBS.   So, if you plan to add the additional 64 meg, make sure you have a BIOS that recognizes it.

My tested using the following:
1.0 Xbox w/128 meg
XBMP and XBMC
MAMEoX
Memcheck

If someone knows the location and hex values that need to be changed in a BIOS, to support 128meg.  Can you please post it.

Please don't dig up posts from 3 years ago to ask a question.

You can swap any controller port from Xbox to Xbox. There are older versions with the daughter board that may not be compatible with what you have, or you may have the one with the daughter board.

The safest way to get one is buying online. Take your Xbox apart and see what version you have. There are many tutorials here on how to do it.

If you can get a cheap Xbox locally, look at the dates on yours and it before you buy. If they are close, you are probably safe. I was buying original Xboxes for $5. Pretty cheap for parts.

I haven't worked on an original controller port for a long time, so I have forgotten a lot. They may all be interchangeable.

the x2bios is based off of a devkit kernel, thats why it supports the 128meg ram.

Hi all,

I am confused!, i definetly have a thomson dvd drive and i do not know why every1 cares what dvd drive they have!

I have a thomson which is "Supposed to be the worst",

mines plays the cheapest dvd - r and cheapest dvd + r discs that i could find!  49p for 1.

It works PERFECT, even cd-rw etc etc.  I have used them for a while and never had 1 problem whether i burn my discs at 4 x, 6x or 8x!

I got a pioneer 107 dvd rw in ma pc so i can burn at 8x!!

Many thanks

Let me remind you that MS never intended for games to actually run off the XBOX harddisk. Let alone off 100+GB harddisks. The cache partitions are formatted between games i think so u dont have a problem there. The E: Partition is supposed to be used for ripped music and saves, none of which actually need THAT high harddrive performance to demand a defragment once in a while.

128 RAM Upgrade

Does Xbox-Linux support additional RAM?
Yes, it is said that Xbox-Linux does support 128 mb RAM. Here is a link to a News Post on X-S
http://www.xbox-scen...ve-7-9-2003.php

So basically, all I have to do is solder in extra RAM and I am ready to go?
No. It is not completely confirmed yet, but you will have to use a newer versions of x2 bios (Do NOT ask where to get it !!!) for extra RAM to be recognized or else your Xbox will give you Orange/Red flashings. You will also have to use program like RAMDelimit to remove the limit from XBE's (available at X-S Tools page)

DVD-ROM

Ok,
I have a real big problem.  sad.gif

I sent my Xbox Motherboard off to have the 128 mb memory Upgrade done by Friendtech and received it back.

My Xbox was already flashed with the X2_4976_02 1 mg bios. I have a v1.0 motherboard.
I did not use any mod chip, this was flashed on my original Xbox motherboard by bridging the two flash points together on top and bottom, and using the 007 exploit trick.
Now when I try to boot, my Xbox flashes Orange/Red.  So I’m thinking this is what’s happening to me as described above.  I do not wish to use any mod chips.

Is there any way to fix this without using a mod chip?
Can I somehow flash my mb back to it’s original bois and then reflash?

That’s Executer version 4976 bios.

I get Error 16! What do I do?
Error 16... EXPLAINED...
Yes, it is a DASH ERROR, but it is due to the TIME
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NORMAL BOOT PROCESS:
1.Xbox turns on
2. several checks are done for hardware, incuding RAM, HD, and DVD-DRIVE, just to test if they are present
3.Xbox checks SYSTEM TIME -> if no time is found -> boot dash off hard drive to set time
4. Xbox looks for default.xbe on DISC, if it is not found, goto 5
5. Xbox boots dash off of Hard drive

What is happening in your case:
1.Xbox turns on
2. several checks are done for hardware, incuding RAM, HD, and DVD-DRIVE, just to test if they are present
3.Xbox checks SYSTEM TIME ->TIME NOT FOUND -> Xbox tries to launch dash off of hard drive -> DASH NOT FOUND-> ERROR 16 - DASH ERROR

The fix:
Put back in your OLD drive (the one with the dash's still on it)
Set the time
Swap the drives without physically unplugging the xbox.

i couldn't help but notice that on the second page in your post you had a quote saying something to the extent:  Does the front side bus come with the motherboard, or do you have to buy that separately.   i assume you meant that to be funny, and it is, because i really doubt the person who said that knew what i am about to say:  really, really old AT style motherboards and before you had to buy a front side bus and install it separately.  of course now, they are all integrated into the motherboard, or in the case of some of AMD 64's chips, its integrated right into the chip.  i know this isn't related to the topic, but here it is, jfyi

v0.3 Just added a little more stuff

128 RAM Upgrade
Is this whole RAM upgrade thing real?
Yes it is real. People have reported to successfully upgrade their Xbox memory to 128mb.

Is there a tutorial on this?
Yes. But it is not for newbies!!
http://unmodded.mine.nu/docs/UpgradingXboxMemory

Are there any pictures we can see of completed process?
Pictures are now available!!
But, you can check out the picture of a Dev Kit Xbox with 128mb RAM.

PICS OF RETAIL MOBO WITH 128MB RAM

Thanks |GateKeeper| and ArmyofONE from Xbox-Wired

If I upgrade my RAM, what improvements will I see?
You won’t see any game speed difference, because the games were coded with 64mb in mind so they are not suited for another 64mb of RAM. It is said if the RAM upgrade is successful, MAME emulator for Xbox will be able to play larger ROMs that were not playable at 64 mb. Extra 64mb of RAM is also useful for developers.

Is it hard to upgrade my RAM?
The upgrading Xbox RAM is very hard and challenging process. It is definitely not for newbies. It requires good soldering skills and a lot of patience.

I would like to read more on this topic, where can I find more info?
You can search this forum for “RAM upgrade” or “memory upgrade”. It should give you a number of posts related to this topic.
Also please read this thread on XboxHacker forums. It definitely should clear many things up.
http://www.xboxhacker.net/forums/index.php...t=ST&f=7&t=6919

I want somebody to upgrade my RAM, is there anybody who does it?
Yes, many individuals on these forums do memory upgrades.

I want videos... are there any?
Yes, check here. You may have to scan through the thread to a link that works

I still want to upgrade my RAM, where can I get the chips for the most reasonable price?
There are large electronic resellers like USBid http://www.usbid.com/ that require a minimum purchase of $ 500 or more.....
The other way is to buy a broken motherboard on Ebay or from Llamma http://www.llamma.com/xbox/ShoppingCart/Br..._Xbox_Parts.htm
or check the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum and see if anybody will trade or donate a broken motherboard.

What would be the best way to remove the chips from the broken motherboard?
the best way would be to use ChipQuik SMD removal kit.

How can I solder the chips into the motherboard?
Here is a good giude written by numbnut on how to mount SMD chips -->http://warmcat.com/milksop/soldering.html

Does Xbox-Linux support additional RAM?
Yes, it is said that Xbox-Linux does support 128 mb RAM. Here is a link to a News Post on X-S
http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/news-a...ve-7-9-2003.php

this is dependant on the bios, but odds are if your modchip is flashable, you already have a bios on it that supports hdd swaping. all xecuter bios's support it, as well as most evox bios's.

I'm thinking of getting the X3CE modchip w/ control pannel and XLCD... I currently have X-bit v1.4...
X-Disk bios (m7.67 FC) i think this is the correct name of the bios...

I would just like to let everyone know the following:  Using the Mechassault "Run Linux" Softmod I had the power cord unplugged for a period of 8 hours and had an error 16 appear.

The fix, leave your xbox plugged in for a period of 5-10 minutes at the error 16 screen.    Reboot and watch your dash appear (I am using the M8 Bios with Evox v3935).  Boot to the M$ dash and reset your time settings.  Power off and then on and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps all with softmod problems.

128MB RAM tutorials do seem to be getting a little hard come by now days..

However i do RAM upgrades, but i'm based in the UK, i have a very good price range and i am willing to do upgrades world wide, please of course do remember RAM upgrades aren't available on 1.6 boxes. If anyone is interested please do PM me. Or get me email from my website in my sig.

To the guy above, if your getting error 07 once plugging in a new DVD-ROM drive, and you don't with an old one, your DVD-ROM drive PCB is faulty. Its blocking the IDE channel so the hard drive times out giving error 07 because it can't comunicate with it. Solution: replace the DVD-ROM drive PCB or the DVD-ROM drive for a whole new one.

Where can I get 616T Samsung model?
You can get one right here --> http://www.superpcmart.com/products/detail...il.cgi?sku=1205

Can I just replace my Thomson/Philips/Samsung with  a Thomson/Philips/Samsung from another Xbox without a modchip?
Yes you can do it without the modchip. Just unplug the old drive and put in a new one and you are ready to go!!!
*

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but does this saying mean, that you do not need a modded Xbox to replace a DVD Drive, or that only a Unmodded Xbox you can just unplug and plug in the drive in with out any issues?

The DVD Drive has to be from an xbox or It needs to be a modified computer Drive...

The Xbox has a different power connector...

Computer has (IDE cable and 4 wire power cable)
Xbox has (IDE cable and 10 wire power/control cable)

Also Xbox DVD Drive does not have an eject botton and that is controlled by the Xbox using the Power/Control cable.

If i'm missing something, Please add or ask.

here's my problem...i don't know where else to go with this

i had to get another xbox and i bought a new chip and i want to take the hdd (120 gb seagate drive) and move it over to the new one...but what happened was weird

when i put the drive in and boot normal i get error 21...i', sure theres something i have to do but i tried it anyway

now when i booted slayers exov bootdisk and apparently the xbox doesn't recognize the HDD...doesn't even show a HDD connected...i then put the old one back in and it read the drive no problem...so i set that up and got a new set of problems

i want to know if there is a way to get the drive from my original modded box to work in the new xbox...is there some way i can make it read the drive?

could this perhaps be a bios issue? (stats on my setup below)

now a second problem is trying to load things in evox on this new xbox...if i try to load XBMC for example it shows the loading screen then goes black and doesn't start...but i can run some games...i can't figure out why the hell it does the black screen...it does this for some backups and so far all original games and dvds...

i'm trying to elaborate as much as possible

here's the setup

XBOX 1.0
SpiderGX with evox M8 bios
samsung dvd drive (works perfect)
retail xbox drive that i don't want

the desired setup would be with the 120 gb drive hopefully not needing to be formatted...as i have tons of stuff on it that i don't have backed up

i hope someone gets back to me on this...

when the HDD was in the box did you lock it???

When you try to move it to the new box it cant unlockit and gives you this error...

If it was unlocked and you never locked it, try to unplug it and plug it in 4 to 5 times... This helps (posibly a bad connection) Double check all connections...

Anyone else has any ideas on this one...
I think everyone forgot about the Xbox and are now Playing with the X360...

if it was locked it will only work in the box it was locked in...

You have to insert it back into the box that it was in, unlock it and then move it to the new box...

Double check all connections, also if you can clean all connections so they have proper contact, otherwise it will act up on you and/or freeze on you...

i have an idea....if theres someway to get my computer to read the 120gb drive...if its even possible i can back it up....then wipe the drive and start over....

is it humanly possible?

i need this drive back but more importantly i need the files on it backed up.....i will not accept this as a lost cause...i just can't....i saved so much stuff on this drive to just give up on it...

the motherboard on the old xbox is killed....it just frags regardless of the chip being there or not...if there is some way to get it to work at least temporarily that should solve alot of problems.....

From my understanding, if you have created an EEPROM backup, you can reflash the new xbox with the old xbox EEPROM, then it will recognise the drive.  You should be able to use it right off the bat.

This process is similar to reflashing the MAC address of the NIC in case you're banned from XBL.

I need help with my new hard drive....

I went through all the FAQ and didn’t see any thing.
I tried posting this in the Softmod they told me to try Hardware blink.gif

I have a v1.6 xbox and softmodded it with “Textbook’s” How to Softmod Your Xbox Using XboxHDM. I used the same tutorial when I upgraded to a 400g hard drive. I have the Xbox working with the F drive and G drive formatted. F formatted with 16kb clusters and G with 32kb clusters. (Something about data corruptions with hard drives over 250g) My problem is that with the new upgrade it takes a whole minute to load XBMC(Main Dash) from the point where the white text M$ logo that pops up after the X animation.

My LED goes from Green to Orange and sits there with a blank screen for a minute and then turns RED when XBMC loads. (- I have it set to red in XBMC-) The old hard drive took seconds to load to XBMC. I saw somewhere that I might have to reflash my bois. (I have no idea on how to do this and really to afraid to try it) Any help or suggestions of why my Xbox might be doing this please let me know.

Thanks  biggrin.gif

I'll take a crack at it.

How to install an additional 64 meg into XBOX's.

I recommend using 4 BRAND NEW memory chips. Not from another MB or Video card.  You can run into problems by using other memory chips that were removed via some type of heat method.  Heat can destroy these chips!

Most of this comes from my 8+ yrs of soldering experience and from this instructional site, that has a video clip, showing how to solder SMT chips.

CAUTION: Before adding the memory or doing any other mods, make sure your box is unplug and you are grounded from any Static Electricity!!

PREP WORK: The XBox MB's that I upgraded were 1.0's and 1.1's.  When looking at the memory pads, you will notice a little mound of solder on each of them.  I removed the extra solder for all of the memory pads first, with solder wick.  The video show the pads being tinned, not having a mound solder on them. You can tell by looking at the memory pads and run your finger across them.  With the memory pads being tinned and the chips being tinned, is ample enough of solder to do the job.

1. Placed a small amount flux around the pads. (just like in the video, but use much less)

2. Line up pin 1 of the chip with pin 1 on the MB.  Look at the another memory chip on the MB as a comparision.

3. Align the pins

4. Check the alignment of all pins, on each sides.

5. Tack down one pin in a corner with the Solder iron.  (DO NOT ADD ANY SOLDER)

6. Check aligment again!

7. Tack down one pin on the opposite corner.  (DO NOT ADD ANY SOLDER)

8. Check alignment.  (After the next step, there is NO turning back!!)

9. Now slowly move the solder iron along the pins on each side, just like in the video.

10. Double check for any shorts between pins with a magnify glass.  I used my wife's embroidery magnify glass.  As you can see in the picture below, a digital camera works great!

11. Now repeat this process for the 3 other memory chips.  2 on each side of the board.

If you compare the pins on the chip you just soldered in, with other memory chip, you will see that there is less solder on your chip.  This if fine.  With the solder still tinned on the pad and the solder tinned on pins of the chip, there is plenty of solder to do the job.

As for difficulty, it was challenging.

Other suggestions:
DON'T RUSH IT!
Take you time!
Do 1 chip an hour!

The 1st time I did this, it took over 4 hrs. (I did not remove the mounds of solder first) Afterwards, I found lots of shorts.
The 2nd time it took an hour. (This time I removed the mounds of solder first) Afterwards, I found 3 shorts.
The 3rd time it took 45 mins. No shorts  wink.gif

Here is a sample of one of the chips I soldered in.
If you look closely, in the RED circles you will see a couple of solder bridges.
IPB Image

Once you have soldered them and the pins look good, you should double check each voltage (VDD, VDDQ) pins with an ohm meter to ground.  In a German 64 meg installation  PDF file, it shows which pins are the VDD and VDDQ pins.

You can do a quick test, by only powering up the MB. You don't need to connect up the drives yet.  Once powered up, you should get the normal GREEN LED and the "X" logo.  Assuming you are using the retail BIOS.

If you get FRAO (Flashing Red And Orange) you have a short somewhere or an open!

Once you get the normal GREEN LED, you can then reassemble the box.
I then loaded up XBMP and went to "System", "Status" and view the memory status. You should see 95/128MB.

Dink...

Dink! Help me please tongue.gif

I just followed your guide as well as http://www.xbox-linu..._Xbox_RAM_HOWTO to upgrade the RAM in my 1.0 xbox.. but Ive got problems.. and quite a long story for it too tongue.gif

I removed 4 rams from a broken 1.0 xbox mobo (that I ve tried to fix, but for some unknown reason didnt want to work) and tried to install em in a my working 1.0 xbox.. but during the removing of the rams from the broken mobo some legs broke tongue.gif I use my soldering station at 350degrees Celcius (as I always do, and never had problems with the heat before) and lots of desoldering flux and the screwriver tip from the infamous youtube video to get each pin from the board..

Since my newest discovery with a Dremel and nintendo wii's latest D2B dvd-controllerboard with cut leggs Ive gained some experience in drilling IC chips to gain access to an original point where the leg is broken. so I used my dremel om all the broken ram pins and drilled my way through carefully to the internal point on the edge, then to solder a sincerely thin Kynar wire between the points on each of them.. soldered everything like the guide said, and when I thought I had it done properly I started up the xbox..

My xbox were just showing green led, no video and no sound.. I turned it off and on again and now it just fragged red/green (<= important, RED/GREEN).. so I turned it off, and went over all the points, found some shorts and whatnot, cleaned it up, then tried again.. now it fragged again (RED/GREEN), so I tried to start it up with EJECT button (since Ive got Cromwell 2.4 bios on it, and just thought perhaps it made a difference) and TO my suprise it did.. a black screen appeared with the text "video decoder error".. appearantly this is an error message Cromwell linux has integrated, didnt know it was that advanced smile.gif then I turned it off again, pushjed the upper ram chip carefully down and hit eject again.. now it booted.. into Cromwell bios, but it only said RAM:64megs and the video feed was weird.. when I pushed the ram down it reacted to it with static and whatnot..

so I turned it off again, went over everything, double checked EVERYTHING, then turned it on again, and now it worked perfectly with Cromwell Linux, it booted no problem, with not only eject button but power button as well.. BUT still only RAM: 64megs..

It boots up fine, no fraggin, but still even with all 4 ram chipsi nsatlled on the mobo, it wont show RAM:128megs.. how come mates?

I turned it off again, and tried to boot up with a modchip instead, with Evox bios installed, it just fragged, but this time it fragged RED / ORANGE!! (<== important), which I thought was weird.. I removed the chip and it started normal with Cromwell.. then I tried with an DuoX2 modchip, which has two versions of Cromwell, normal flash bios 3.0.3 and Cromwell Linux, in the two different banks.. BOTH worked to boot from.. then I tried flashing with Xecuter 2 bios, but it still fragged Red/Orange..

now my question is,, why do Cromwell Linux bios and FLashbios Cromwell bios boot up fine and not Evox bios nor Xecuter bios?

but since it works with Cromwell, why wont it state RAM: 128megs?

this is REALLY annoying, as Ive been over this mobo 3 days almost.. trying to get it to work..

it looks pretty good, and I consider myself a professional solderer, which is why I went for this upgrade and wanted to do it myself..

Do you know what it could be mates?

could the heat from my soldering iron have messed the rams up? or somecause of short/no leg, which at the same time allows Cromwell to boot but not Evox Bios?

Anyone please pm me or answer to this post.. I badly need an answer..

considering buying 4 sets of 4-pack rams completely new to try and see if that works..

I added four chips to an otherwise stock 1.0 box (more or less) and after the usual FRAO period while I patched up the shorts, it seemed to boot normally... Kinda. Solid green LED and the DVD drive ejected (not a "coma box"), however, no audio/video.

After messing about with the board for about a week, I finally gave in and removed the extra chips. Console booted up fine.

Flashed with X2 5035, re-installed the extra chips, and off it went...

So! Either I missed a short the first time around and the X-Box stopped FRAO'ing anyway (I personally doubt it), or the 1.0 retail BIOS doesn't like extra RAM.

I would like to point out for anyone out there interested in doing the ram upgrade that it is possible to check your install after each chip to know weather or not it has been installed correctly. The bios that needs to be used to do this is cromwell 2.40 I have not checked any other versions of cromwell to see if they will work as well.
How you can tell that the chip is installed correctly is after you install it and you turn it on it should boot with a normal solid green led with no audio or video. If it has a short or bridge it will FRAG or FRAO.It will not or any other bios that I have tested would not boot correctly with an odd amount of chips every other bios I tried besides cromwell would 3 boot frao when 5 to 7 chips were installed.

So I have installed 4 chips with one small issue. I broke a pin. However, this pin does not seem to be connected to anything, and is shorted to the neighboring pin by default, even in the original RAM chips. My meter even showed continuity between the little pin stub and the pad it should have been soldered to.

I have a modchip, so I have an Xecuter bios and a Cromwell bios I can switch between, in addition to the stock bios. All BIOSes seem to boot normally in regards to the LED (before it would turn itself on and off a couple of times, and then blink). However, I cannot get any audio or video. I have tried both composite and component connections. Any tips?

The original 1.0 consoles don't give error codes. Presumably this system is unmodded?

Most likely it'll be the HDD or PSU at fault. Slight chance it's the DVD drive.

Yes, it is completely unmodded.  The power supply unit has been a little finicky since the beginning (it always says the connection is bad when I hit the test button, even though it worked fine).  If I can find another wire, I'll try that first.  I have a friend who's willing to sell me his Xbox for $20, so if all else fails, I'll try that and swa the hard drive (assuming that's not what's causing the problem).  Thanks for your help!

Not if it's unmodded. The disk is locked to the motherboard, and to swap disks you need the eeprom from his motherboard to unlock his disk, and from your motherboard to relock the disk to work in your Xbox. To get that you have to build a simple eeprom reader, or mod both Xboxes.

I hope people will find this info useful  wink.gif

v0.3 Just added a little more stuff

128 RAM Upgrade
Is this whole RAM upgrade thing real?
Yes it is real. People have reported to successfully upgrade their Xbox memory to 128mb.

Is there a tutorial on this?
Yes. But it is not for newbies!!
http://unmodded.mine...adingXboxMemory

Are there any pictures we can see of completed process?
Pictures are now available!!
But, you can check out the picture of a Dev Kit Xbox with 128mb RAM.
DEV KIT w/ 128Mb RAM
(edited to link to page format is nice - brahm2) smile.gif
PICS OF RETAIL MOBO WITH 128MB RAM
http://xbox-wired.co.../Xdk/retail128/

It definitely should clear many things up.
http://www.xboxhacke...t=ST&f=7&t=6919

I want somebody to upgrade my RAM, is there anybody who does it?
Yes, many individuals on these forums do memory upgrades.

I want videos... are there any?
Yes, check here. You may have to scan through the thread to a link that works

I still want to upgrade my RAM, where can I get the chips for the most reasonable price?
There are large electronic resellers like USBid http://www.usbid.com/ that require a minimum purchase of $ 500 or more.....
The other way is to buy a broken motherboard on Ebay or from Llamma http://www.llamma.co..._Xbox_Parts.htm
or check the Buy/Sell/Trade Forum and see if anybody will trade or donate a broken motherboard.

What would be the best way to remove the chips from the broken motherboard?
the best way would be to use ChipQuik SMD removal kit.

How can I solder the chips into the motherboard?
Here is a good giude written by numbnut on how to mount SMD chips -->http://warmcat.com/m.../soldering.html

DVD-ROM

Where can I get 616T Samsung model?
You can get one right here --> http://www.superpcma...il.cgi?sku=1205

Can I just replace my Thomson/Philips/Samsung with  a Thomson/Philips/Samsung from another Xbox without a modchip?
Yes you can do it without the modchip. Just unplug the old drive and put in a new one and you are ready to go!!!

The best way to get the RAM chips is to buy GeForce 2 GTS Pro 64MB DDR wink.gif.

You can use these RAM chips: K4D 263238M - QC50, or QC40, or even K4D263238D-QC50.

I soldered additional 64Megs to my first Xbox, but with no succes. It wasn't so hard actually. The hardest part was desoldering that thingies off of my Xbox smile.gif. But I did it succesfully this time. Too bad I fucked up my friends box, so I had to give mine to him tongue.gif.

Now I'm waitin for my second Xbox, and I have RAM chips from that fucked up console smile.gif. Wish me luck tongue.gif.

According to opcode's posts on xboxhacker, you *can* run a stock Xbox with added RAM. Of course, it's only useable if you're running a replacement BIOS, but what I'm getting at is that this particular point seems to indicate that once you upgrade your RAM, you're stuck with keeping your modchip on, or else the box won't boot.

At least, that's the way I took it.

Xbox with additional RAM will boot with any retail bios, but it just won't use that RAM. Xbox will use only it's 64megs.

Anyway; you can still play on Live

Guide To Installing a New HDD with Software Hacks
(Taken from Sottilde - thanks!!)

TUTORIAL ----------------------------------------------------------------

Part 1 - Collecting Keys and Preparation - Part 1

1. Using 007 hack or font/audio hack, use Evolution-X's 'backup' feature.  FTP into the xbox and copy the C:backup folder over to somewhere on your computer.

1a.  Run LiveInfo and make sure the new HD you are going to use for the xbox is lockable - Locking: NOT LOCKED is lockable, Locking: NOT SUPPORTED is NOT lockable.  Your only chance with that drive is to flash your TSOP or get a modchip.

2. Open up your xbox case, unplug the original HD, and put it somewhere safe.

3. Download atapwd and hddunlock from xbins.

4. Grab norton ghost and create a boot floppy - No need for LPT, USB, CD-R support, etc.

5. Unzip and put atapwd and hddunlock in their own folders - e.x. a:atapwd  a:hddunlock

6. Grab hdprepar and zero the first 4096 sectors on the drive to be put into the xbox.  BE VERY CAREFUL!  You might have your OS's drive and the new drive be the same size.  Usually they vary by a few megabytes, though.  Use that as a reference.  If you zero your OS's drive, you may be able to save yourself with PartitionMagic (search google - You'll have to either buy it or crack it).

7. Once that finishes (should be relatively fast, 5 seconds or so) run liveinfo.  Click 'load eeprom' and direct it to the backup folder you downloaded from the xbox.  Point it to eeprom.bin .  Make sure the HD you want to put in the xbox is selected.

8. Write down the key that shows up in the bottom half of the screen - should be 40 characters.  Make sure that in the top half, the bottom-most field is NOT all 0's.  If it is, try loading the EEPROM again.  Also, open and write down/print hddkey.txt .  VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Part 2 - Unlocking Drives - Part 2

9. Turn off your computer.  Pop out your OS's HD.  Put the xbox HD on the Primary IDE channel - no other devices hooked up.  Put the HD you are going to put in the xbox on the secondary channel, also with no slave.  Make sure both HDs are either set to CS or Master.

10. Set to boot from floppy in your BIOS, and pop in the floppy we prepared earlier.  It should load for a minute or so.
As soon as Ghost loads WRITE DOWN the license.  I have NO idea why but it asks for this later.  Some odd security feature.
QUIT ghost.

11. Type:

cd atapwd
atapwd.exe

Check to make sure both drives are listed.  You should see SELFXV written at the top.  The replacement drive should only have S checked, with the rest -'s.  The xbox drive should have E and L checked, as well.

12.  Type:
cd..
cd hddunl~1
hdunlock.exe

Select the xbox's HD.  Type in the password you printed from hddkey.txt .  Don't bother putting in the colons, and you don't need to type the 0's at the end.

13. Type:
cd..
cd atapwd
atapwd.exe

Make sure that the L now has a - for the xbox HD.

14. Type:
cd..
cd hddunl~1
hddisabl.exe

Select the xbox HD, and type in the password from hddkey.txt again, in the same format (no colons, no 0's at the end).

15. Type:
cd..
cd atapwd
atapwd.exe

Make sure that both the E and the L now have -'s for the xbox HD.

If they do, great!  Your xbox HD is now unlocked!  (note - hdunlock.exe unlocks the HD, hddisabl prevents it from relocking itself).

Part 3 - Cloning Your Xbox HD - Part 3

16. Type:
cd..
cd ghost
ghostpe.exe /ir

This will start ghost in Raw Mode.  After it loads up (you did write down that license, right?  If not, here's your chance to write it down again).  Now, move the mouse to the bottom-left of the screen (to pop up the menu) and select disk -> to disk.

17. Select the source and destination drives - Source is xbox HD, destination is new HD.  Allow it to finish copying (should be 10 minutes max).  Once it finishes, quit ghost.

Part 4 - Locking Drives - Part 4

18. Type:
cd..
cd hddunl~1
hdlock.exe

Now, you need to lock BOTH drives.  Use the password from hddkey.txt to lock the xbox HD (that is, if you want to keep it as a backup, which is VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED).  Use the password you got from LiveInfo to lock the replacement HD.

19.  Type:
cd..
cd atapwd
atapwd.exe

Check both drives in atapwd.  They should be locked now.

Congrats!  Your HD is now prepared - The easy, no hdd-driver, no linux way!

20.  Pop the replacement HD into the xbox case.  MAKE SURE the jumper is set to CS (cable select).

Close up the xbox case (don't screw it in just yet) and plug in the xbox.  Hook it up and turn it on.  If you did it right, it'll boot up and everything will be fine.  If you get an error 6, or related errors, put the replacement HD and xbox HD back in your computer, unlock/disable them both (xbox hd uses hddkey.txt password, replacement HD uses LiveInfo password).  Repeat steps 16-20.

Good luck with it!  Mods: Possible sticky? biggrin.gif

Sottilde

P.S. Let me know how it goes.

Anyone else out there that does it besides Wolfsoft? I'm edgy about shipping a box to them all the way out in Germany. If US Customs was finicky about Bung kits, I can only imagine what they'd have to say about this. Not that they'd know, but does that mean I should trust them?

mad.gif. My PAL Xbox's DVD seems to be going down the pan, it has chronic read problems on games that worked fine, I keep getting DDDE's (Dirty/Disk Damaged Error) I have verified the disks on other machines and work fine.  What and how do I change the DVD on a unmodded box, I asked MS for a replacement to buy and they just got funny telling me to send it to them to repair, I want to keep the original look at the mo so how do I keep the flush fitting drive door in place.

Cheers all to everyone except the snotty buggers at MS

Blind Samuari wrote:
QUOTE
Is there a tutorial on this?
There is no definite tutorial on how to do this.

If you look closely, in the RED circles you will see a couple of solder bridges.
user posted image
