Not to be smart, but I'm asking so I don't have to try several.

If you had to chose one, what would it be?

My Sony cdrw's work every try and so do my memorex, but I think the Sony discs are of higher quality.

rolleyes.gif   It's not the version of the XBOX that matters.  It is the DVD Drive itself.  Generally speaking the Thomson is the only one that reads CD-RW.  Stick to quality brands (no, memorex doesn't qualify).  Verbatim and Fujifilm would be my two recommendations.

Man I'm a newbie at this.  And I have read the FAQ.

Are there more than one different drives that shipped with ver 1?

I find it hard to believe you have read the FAQ and don't know about the 3 different XBOX DVD Drives out there.  If your XBOX was manufactered prior to August 2002 you will either have a Philips or a Thomson drive.  Some V1.0s have samsungs but they were manufactered August 2002 or later.  Either way though, eject the DVD Tray on your XBOX and compare it to the following photo:

No it's just that this question gets asked quite a bit here.  Do a search for Thomson and CD-RW and you will have page after page of threads.

I guess that I'm going to have to try one of the other brands because I have tried memorex and tdk both no luck. I guess this damn thing is picky.

My Thomson likes generic slow (4X) rated CD-RWs.

Thompson's are a bitch if ya ask me. Never had a problem here with Verbatim CD-RW...

Hope that helps

Giggy

PS--I did find tho that you get better luck if you do a full erase rather then a quick aswell

That is also true of DVD-RW.  I have had a DVD-RW that failed every time I do a quick erase but if I did a full erase it worked perfectly.
