Title: Adding A Portable Screen
Post by: underworlderZer0 on February 09, 2008, 02:08:00 AM
I was interested in picking up an Intech "game screen" for my XBOX so I can bring it to work to watch DVD's and play games (I work the graveyard shift at a hotel and literally have 1 hour of work to do in an 8 hour shift- and my manager has told me I can do whatever I want to pass the time as long as I'm up front and quiet).

Anyway, almost all of the reviews of these screens basically say they are poorly made and a waste of money. I still would like to find a decent 7 or 8 inch monitor that I can attach to the XBOX for easy portability. Any suggestions? Does anybody own an Intech screen to give me an idea of the quality?

Otherwise my other option would be to hook it to a computer monitor here at work, but from what I've gathered, that would involve modding the box so that it will only work with a cpu monitor. I'd like to be able to bring it to work and use it with the portable screen, but then be able to bring it home and hook it up to my TV.

Thanks in advance for any input you might have.

Not true. Really its just a matter of how much work/money you're willing to put into your xbox. There are two ways to achieve hooking up your xbox to a monitor (and none are permenant).

The first is to just buy an X2VGA and component pack for the xbox (or something similar, this is just the best from what I've seen). Quick and easy, no soldering involved and as soon as a regular composite pack is used its completely usable on a TV.

The second (and cheapest) way to do it requires opening up the xbox and soldering directly onto the motherboard. Following this guide you can solder in a vga port and switches (though, you will also need a vga compatible bios) which will enable you to use your xbox on a PC monitor.

If you have any specific questions let me know.

I have a modded XBOX, and I see the stickied thread at the top of this forum... If I were to buy the X2VGA and component pack, would I need to patch my BIOS, or is that only for those who are using the secon option you outlined involving soldering to the mobo?

Yup, the modified BIOS is only for when you do a custom VGA port. X2VGA transcodes the signal into something the monitor can use without the need for a specialized BIOS.

If it is a ver. 1.5 or lower xbox I would find a sync on green monitor and just use frosty's vga softmod with a custom made VGA cable. The cable can also be bought premade. This way requires no soldering on your part and the softmod will make everything work in VGA mode. See here for details.
