Yeah, the sync-splitting circuit has been known to be incompatible with some monitors, but usually messing with the resistor fixes the problem.
Have you tried a 470k resistor?
And as for the 720p/1080i issue, that would be caused by either wiring or your monitor simply not liking the widescreen resolutions.
Also, are you 100% sure that your monitor at home is not sync-on-green? Because you could actually wire the circuit incorrectly, and sync-on-green monitors would still work, but non-SOG monitors wouldn't... I've seen this happen many times before by people accidentally wiring the LM1881N chip backwards...
