Title: Vga Patcher V0.8 Compatibility Thread
Post by: FrostyTheSnowman on May 19, 2007, 04:05:00 PM
Okay, so now that I have released VGA Patcher v0.8 and Evox M8+ VGA Patcher (Based on VGA Patcher v0.8) I would really like to know how it's working for everybody!  happy.gif

I would also like to find out if there are any compatibility problems with my patchers and certain BIOSes (so I can see if any BIOS-specific patchers need to be made), so if you are using either of my patchers, please reply to this thread with the following information:

1. XBOX Version (v1.0-v1.5)

2. Encoder Version (Conexant, Focus)

3. BIOS Version (Any BIOS, e.g. 'Xecuter 2 5035' or 'Xecuter 2 4981.67')

Also, please note any strange video behaviors (if any exist).

NOTE: You will occasionally see a quick 'purple screen' when games switch screens. This is normal, it's simply the 'ForceGPUReset' code resetting the GPU to enforce the VGA settings.  happy.gif

Results for VGA Patcher 0.8

1. XBOX Version 1.0 3944

2. Encoder Conexant

3. X2 Bios 4983.6

4. Special Notes: 128mb Memory

So far, everything has worked flawlessly. XBMC and my games are behaving problem free as they normally have with NKPatcher. On the green screen games such as KOTOR etc, I will see it turn green during certain loading areas but then be forced back into proper colors.

For the < 1% VGA & 128mb users, we can rejoice  biggrin.gif  Green screen programs that take advantage of 128mb can now be used. MAME and Surreal are working fine now. We don't have to be limited to 64mb now.

All I can say is the ultimate result for my needs  love.gif I used to switch between NKpatcher and a VGA Patcher 0.7 X2 Bios. Even then, I could not play MAME without the green screen in 128mb mode. Now I can and I also do not have to switch between Bioses.

You Rock Frosty and PunMaster!

A bit redundant but here are the results for my cousin's xbox. I can assume everything runs fine since I've received no complaints.

1. Xbox Version 1 4034

2. Conexant

3. X2 4983.6

1. Xbox Version 1.0

2. Conexant encoder

3. Evox M8 bios (not sure of the exact version, it is the latest one I found) flashed to TSOP

I can't get anything to display right. I am connecting the Xbox to a Samsung 941bw (19" wide TFT LCD) with a vga cable made according to the Xbox Linux sync-on-green guide. The flubber animation shows in proper color with the Evox logo, but then it gives a black screen no matter what it tries to load (I have tried my Avalaunch dash, Halo 2, PGR 2, and Xebian 1.4 so far).

Should I try patching a different BIOS (like an X2 or something)?

No, you need to change your video cable's mode setting to 2+3 (HDTV) instead of 1+3. (old VGA mode, Linux only)

The Xbox-Linux diagram is for Linux only. If you change your video mode to 2+3, everything should work properly. happy.gif

Follow this diagram to do it:

http://www.360mods.n...05/image316.gif

NOTE: Since you are seeing the flubber correctly, that means that your BIOS is correctly patched. happy.gif

NOTE 2: Once you switch your cable to 2+3 (HDTV) the flubber will not show up anymore. This is normal, just wait a minute and your dashboard will show up just fine.

NOTE 3: Make sure that at least 480p is enabled in your Microsoft Dashboard.

Sweet, thanks.  biggrin.gif  I have to solder the audio cables anyway, so I will try that too.

After changing the cable mode (switching the jumper wire), I get nothing on the screen from the VGA cable. I set the Xbox to widescreen mode in the MS dash (I assume that is the 480p, or is there something else?). When I use the composite cable, I get the weird green colors that I expect from the vga bios patch. I am wondering if it is not the way the cable was made. It looks fine and there is no resistance between each wire, but it is not working now. Is there some other mode I can set on the cable to get some output? This is a bit confusing to me, but I would like to get it to work. Does 480p or higher mode need to be set in Avalaunch (the dash my Xbox boots to right now)?

No, widescreen is not 480p.

The HDTV options (480p, 720p, 1080i) only show up in the Microsoft Dashboard when an HDTV cable is plugged in. Which means that you need to have an HDTV cable (or your VGA cable) plugged in to enable the settings. When you have an HDTV (or your VGA cable) plugged in the 480p, 720p, and 1080i settings will magically appear under the 'widescreen' option in the Microsoft Dashboard's 'video' settings.

NOTE: If you do not have an HDTV, you can simply connect the green wire and the ground of your VGA cable to a normal TV's yellow video input. The picture will be in black and white, but you should be able to navigate well enough to enable 480p.  happy.gif

I just ordered a component cable for my Xbox, so I should be able to try the setting on my hdtv. Thank you for your help.

No problem, just be sure and report back on how it works out for you.  happy.gif

Ok, now for the report. I can now use Avalaunch and all of my games (including Splinter Cell) in either 720p or 480p on my computer monitor (mentioned above). All colors work, and the image is crisp and clear. My Evox dash also works, just not in the same resolution. XBMC looks like it will need some configuration to work properly, but that has nothing to do with the BIOS. The MS dash does not seem to display, but I don't care about that. Overall, I am very pleased with the patch and cable.

Sweet, glad to hear it works for you!  happy.gif

Also, if your Microsoft Dashboard is version 5960 (newest version) then you can simply hold down the L Trigger, R Trigger, Left Analog Button (click down) and Right Analog Button (click down) all at once and it will force the Microsoft Dashboard to display in 480p. (which will allow you to see it on your VGA monitor)

P.S. Are you using my Evox M8+ VGA Patcher, or VGA Patcher v0.8?

I am using the Evox M8+ VGA patcher v8.0 (I am a bit new to this, so I don't know the specific stuff). I don't remember what version my MS dash is (I pretty much stopped using it after softmodding the box), but i'll check later.

[edit] I do have the 5960 MS dash and a 5838 kernel (the one Evox M8 is based on).

720p: remain purple washed... ph34r.gif  tested with SoulCalibur2 & XBMC

This is caused by your monitor not liking the negative sync pulse generated by the 720p resolution with the Conexant/Focus encoders. Most monitors can handle 720p fine, but i've heard of many monitors that still have either a purple image or a dark picture.

So, it's just a monitor compatibility problem. But i'm glad to hear that 480p and 1080i work properly with your monitor.  If you try 720p with another Sync-on-Green monitor, it should work properly. happy.gif

P.S. Thanks for contributing to my compatibility thread.   happy.gif

NOTE: Viewsonic & Acer monitors are usually compatible with all resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080i), but some Sony and NEC monitors are known to have 720p/1080i issues. (in my experience)

Strangely even with the latest patch, the Hitman games still come up green, everything else seems okay.

They also come up not in progressive scan (480i) I wonder if that is related, everything else runs in 480P
