That's actually the same thing I'm trying to do. I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm going to use PBL to load some bfm VGA bioses, like the junkmonkey, yoshihiro's focus debug, and some hacked bfm bioses (x2, evox m7) patched with Frosty's VGA patcher 0.7. You could try that.
It's not really a full softmod, since it doesn't make use of an exploit to launch the biosloader xbe, but it should work for your purposes.

nice one brilliantdonky, i never knew about a bios loader on the xbox, im gonna give it a whirl.
