Title: Xbox To Vga On Projector
Post by: notonmyxbox on May 19, 2006, 11:08:00 AM
hi all

i'm a newbie and not hugely tech minded. as you can see i just want to get the best pic from my xbox to projector.

i've seen this.....

http://www.xbox.com/en-us/hardware/highdefinitionavpack.htm

(xbox hd av pack - MS product)

......and logic tells me that i can go from this to a vga (component to vga cable) but as it hasn't been suggested elsewhere can someone explain why this is not the best option??? Willl this option be better than s-video?

thanks

there is a VGA mod already for the Xbox, if you really want to go VGA out then do that.

This to VGA probably won't work because most of the time when you see component to VGA adapters they require the source to put out a special signal to work.  You cannot just plug a VGA to component cable into any old thing and expect it to work.

Also component cable is perfectly capable of carrying the max 1080i that xbox puts out with no valuable loss in quality (don't forget VGA is analog also, so it's not even going to get the benefit of digital signal).

And if you are going with the assumption that VGA is better than component for some reason, going from componet to VGA will not make your quality any better because a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, think about recording a tape to a CD, that wouldn't improve quality.  Thus going from component to VGA will, at best, give you component quality.

If your projector only supports VGA input and has no component in then just do the VGA mod.  I can't say for sure but I don't think a componet to VGA solution is a good way to go.

And yes it will be better than Svideo as it will give you access to the higher resolutions.

thanks for that but just to clarify. the vga mod you mention - is that the soldering job? also am i right in saying that using my intended route I get component quality - if so that'll do me just fine......

my projector only has a vga input.....

Another way that you could connect your Xbox to your projector would be to buy either the X2VGA 2 or X2VGA+.

ok - thanks again but in your opinion what is my best option - ie what would give me the best results (in terms of picture quality) from these 3 options - or will they all give me the same?

1. hd pack - as in first link - which would need a male component to vga.
2. xbox to component  - http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/XPX04.html which would require female component to vga.
3. x2vga.

I would say that the X2VGA would give you the best picture quality, because there are no cords involved to cause interference, and it is a dedicated VGA device.

I own an X2VGA+, and there doesn't seem to be much room for picture improvement.

Again, don't forget that often you can't just plug a VGA to component adapter in and get the proper signal out to work.   Just becuase the plugs fit doesn't mean you will get a useable signal.

Since you only have VGA in I would go with the X2VGA, no personal experience with it but it sounds like the other options aren't really options for you...

Sorry to drag this up again but with this setup:

hd pack connected to component to vga cable via couplers

am i getting the same as x2vga will give me? I am getting a picture and can access the higher res but don't know if I'm seeing the best I can get.

sorry for asking the same question on a number of threads....
