I'm not sure why it wouldn't work. Looks like it might work to me. You'd be using your computer as the decoder. And then you'd have to be running an app that would in realtime passthrough the audio to your speakers (does one exist? probably).
ok i kinda have the same question except i have reg. a/v cables and a Dell 5650 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers
and i was wondering if u can have surround sound with these computer speakers and no sound card i use a dazzle* dv hollywood bridge
so to do whatever to the audio like i have the (a/v xbox cable going in) to the tv and then i have another a/v cable coming from the (a/v out) and then it is in the (a/v in) on the dazzle and i have a (monstercable audio only MALE to a FEMALE converter With a nother MALE tip to plug into my computer) any help would be appreciated
You'll need a digital fiber optical cable output from your XBOX to your sound processor to get true surround sound. I'm surprised the Dazzle doesn't have optical in (or at least coax digital in).
I think with the Dazzle, you'd be accomplishing the same thing as this:

As far as I know, there is no software that is able to decode an AC3-stream from an SPDIF-input port on a soundcard to analog 5.1.

Yeah I have no idea if that software exists. I assumed the person who was speccing out the system above had already identified some such software.
I just found this

When I get my hands on one of those hot-and-sexy sound cards with Dolby Digital Live, it would make a perfect fit with that decoder.
I had the HDTV A/V Pack, so it wasn't that bad

I use mine with a xbox and also with my nforce2 soundstorm (this one has the Dolby Digital Live as you might know) and its awesome for gaming with surround or other non surround sources (xvid/divx)
According to this it can be done.
