Title: Vga Adapter Parts List Please Help.
Post by: leeloo5 on July 06, 2005, 05:45:00 PM
I've looked at two tutorials, and am a little confused.

#1:
http://www.xbox-scen...s/vga-cable.php

#2:
http://www.xbox-linu.../Xbox_VGA_HOWTO

Here are my questions:

#1:  what resistor should i use.  one of the sites says 680kO and the other says 575kO.  does it matter?

#2:  what do i connect to pin 8 on the LM1881?  one says pin 1 of the AVIP and the other says Vcc (5-12v).  what is the vcc 5-12v mean?

#3:  Ground?  one of them says to connect to pins 12 on the AVIP, the other just says Gnd.

#4:  One says to connect AVIP 1 to VGA 8 and the other says to connect AVIP 16 to VGA 8.

Someone please help me figure this out.  I have done a search to find this information but i couldn't.

thanks a lot, the search wouldn't let me search for VGA since its only three letters.  I'm sorry if this was a useless post.  I have one quick question.  Do i need to use actual switches?  or could i just connect the parts at 1 & 3 if i want vga to be on all the time?

i guess also, why wouldn't i want to enable the high def mode?  as in 2 & 3 and not the vga mode?

one more stupid question.   how am i looking at these diagrams?

am i looking at the parts that i solder or am i looking at the front?

you can just bridge the connection instead of using switches.  I suggest HD mode (2+3) and the VGA version of iND-BiOS 5001, so you can get 720p and 1080i (if your monitor supports them)

The pin connections in JaredC01's diagram are as seen from the bottom of the motherboard.  If you read through the first couple pages of the thread there's info on converting those pin numbers to that on an external connector such as the normal xbox A/V cable.

oh, and for future reference, you can search for 3 letter words if you add another word on your search... for example, instead of "VGA", search for "VGA cable" or "VGA connection"

Ok, dont mean to be rude, but i've read through many tutorials and the first 5 pages of the thread, and i'm still confused.

"from the motherboard" still doesn't help me.

Heres what i want to know.  Imagine i have an xbox a/v cable in front of me and its just as a bought it.  Now i'm looking at the connectors.  Which number is at the top left?  23, 24, 1, or 2?

if it isn't 1, i just soldered all the wires wrong.

all of the diagrams can be seen from two angles so its really confusing.  then i looked at

http://www.gamesx.co...inouts/xbox.htm

and it said that Vcc was on the bottom, but on this diagram it looks like its on the top.

any help would be appreciated.

i think i may know what one of the problems is.

I took apart the a/v connector and am soldering wires to those connections.  I am not soldering onto the motherboard.  It seems that that diagram is for soldering onto the motherboard.

My question still remains about which pins are which, but i'm wondering if they look so odd because one is on the motherboard and the other the cable?

The link you provided numbers the pins differently than jared's guide.  If you're following jared's guide, the connections on the xbox a/v cable are as follows:

Looking at where you solder the connections in the cable, the lower right is pin 1.  The top right is pin 2.  The top of the connector has all the even numbered connections, the bottom of the connector has the odd connections.  keep in mind that the top of the connector is the side with the slanted corners

hope that helps!

Ok, thanks a lot, i'm sorry i didn't get it too fast.  It is a little confusing that the top row on his picture is the bottom rom on the cable, but i only have to resolder 4 wires so it wont be too bad.

is his picture of motherboard connections?  and are the other ones of cable connections?

I'll get the lm1881 and resistor in the mail soon so i should see if it all works, i was going to test it without these parts, will that fry my xbox?  is it possible to do so?

don't listen to lostboyz...  You can try the cable without the sync seperator.  It'll work if your monitor is sync-on-green capable.  Nothing bad will happen to your monitor or xbox if it doesn't work.

The pictures in jared's tut are of the connections on the bottom of the motherboard.  The diagram in L33's tut are numbered the same way as jared's, but show the cable connector.

hope that helps.  Good luck!

THank you so much everyone.  i soldered all of the cables, and it works great.  I'm very impressed with 480p and 720p.  it is quite amazing.

I tried connecting it to my monitor without the synch part and it didn't work, but then i connected it to my projector and it worked.  i also changed the setting in my projector to YPbPr and it fixed all the color problems.

i had just bought an adapter for the component cable to hook it up to the projector but i dont need that anymore.

Thanks again you guys, i'm off to solder the audio cables in, hope it works.

One thing i still have a question about and i couldn't find it in the guide:

What is the difference between VGA mode and Component mode?

there isn't a vga cable for the xbox so what is this vga mode?  does it make any difference?  what is the benefit?

any VGA bios will allow you to use VGA mode.  this mode only outputs in 640x480, but needs 480p enabled on your xbox to do so. (480p = 720x480)

using iND-BiOS 5001 VGA, you can put your cable on HD (component) mode and connect it to a VGA monitor, outputting in 480p, 720p, and 1080i (if your monitor supports the modes)

thanks a lot.  Does vga mode output in RGB instead of the YPbPr signal that component outputs?

Otherwise it seems that the HD mode will work better.

VGA mode doesn't output at all without a VGA enabled bios.  Both VGA and HD mode output in RGB if you have a VGA bios installed.  The fact that the colors didn't work on your projector in RGB mode but they worked in YPrPb tells me you don't have a VGA bios installed.  If you still plan to install the sync circuit and use your box on a vga monitor, you will need a vga bios.

Ok thanks, i downloaded several vga bioses, but i haven't installed them yet.  I wasn't sure if the vga bios switched the signal to RGB but i thought it did.  In the end the only difference will be the set resolution of 640x480 on a VGA mode as to different resolutions on the HD mode.  I think i will leave it in HD mode and see if that works.  I am also looking into getting an adapter to convert YPbPr into RBG so that i can use the cable on un-moded xbox's and also since i kind of like the biod i use 4981.  if this doesn't work its not too much of a problem to switch which bios loads when i want to run it on a monitor.

Thanks alot guys for all your help, you answered all of my questions and so far it works great.  I should get the other parts next week and will add the sync circuit.

happy modding.

the IND-bios5001vga06 works great.  it looks like the circuit to build the YPbPr to RGB is way too complex and requires too many parts, i'll just have to use a bios.
