The built in dvd playback is only in the latest two builds of avalaunch. Just go up to the disc icon image like you normally would when accessing a disc from avalaunch, but instead of it sending you to the ms dvd player, or dvdx2, an avalaunch logo appears which then sends you to the dvd player.
Thanks alot Foe-Hammer, just tried playing some of my DVD's in 720p in Avalaunch. The quality admittedly is not as good as XMBC however with full support for subtitles and menu's it is a great substitute to crappy 480p (which looks horribly interlaced on a monitor) in DVDX.
Nice
Okay, so I got it to work (I think, when I hit the white button and check it says 1920x1080 and right below that it says interlaced so I would assume this means it worked??) and have a few questions.
1) If it worked, will it still be anamorphic (black bars across the top and bottom)?
2) It looks slightly pixelated, is this due to being an upconverted source compared to an original 1080i source?
3) Has anyone had issues loading from certain DVDs? For instance, I kept trying this with Chronicles of Riddick and it would load the white background Avalaunch 'A' and then loop back to the main Avalaunch menu. I swapped out Napoleon Dynamite and it loaded fine and this time it had a black background Avalaunch 'A' and loaded the root menu of the DVD just fine. Once it gets to this point, I can eject Napoleon and put Riddick in and then it works fine. I also tested from the beginning with Borne Supremacy and it loaded fine as well. Seems as though Riddick will not load and I wonder how many others are like this. Is there a bug that can be worked out by editing some settings?
Thanks.
I recommend using 720p, and disabling 1080i in the avalaunch menu. IMO 720p looks better, and is less buggy then 1080i.

i think your best bet would be to experiement around to see what configuration gives you the best picture quality.

yeah i personally find that XBMC DVD playback is better for me than avalaunch.

actually if your TV likes 1080i signals, and upconverts 720p to 1080i then i would stick with 1080i output from the xbox.
I guess it's time to update Ava on my xbox and give it a shot at 720p and 1080i. But reading posts so far, it sounds like the PQ is lacking @ 720p and 1080i in ava's dvd playback.
Anyone else notice a lack of PQ between the a the 480p hacked ms dash dvd player vs ava's 720p/1080i dvd player?

As an update, thanks to Foe-hammer for the Avalaunch suggestion. I don't keep up with that dashboard and had no idea it upconverted to 1080i.
