Title: Connecting To A Laptop
Post by: wweboy on February 24, 2004, 08:24:00 PM
I actually did this and it worked well...

First get the BELKIN VIDEO BUS II it goes for 99 dollars it's a USB plug in and then it has RCA cables and a S video plug ins. then just connect it to one of your usb ports and hook the xbox video cables in and find like a video capture program that u can view whats on the screen I used my ATI TV viewer program that cam with my cap card for my computer, I just changed the setting to run off of the Video Bus and I got full screen and everything and audio was graet.

your best option would probably be one of those portable monitors. video capture devices are either expensive and good, or cheap and crappy (at least for playing video games)

Using any TV tuner is not a good idea for the xbox on a PC. I have a $200 Haugpauge WinTVPVR 2 USB 2.0 version and there is still some delay on my laptop. It is just the amount of time that it takes the info to pass thru the USB Bus. Same goes when i'm watching TV on it. There is a PCMCIA tuner card on the marker with HDTV inputs but it costs $650 for the lower model to $1100 for the better one  ohmy.gif . I bought at 19'' LCD off tigerdiect.com and it is sooo sweet. It has the best contrast ratio and pixel response time of any LCD on the market, and it only cost me $500 for the Sceptre versus the $1100 price tag on the Viewsonic!
It even takes Sync on green VGA

Hi Gerzand

What's the model number of your new 19" LCD. I am in the market for one myself. Just about to buy an Evesham Athlon 64 bit machine but want a great monitor that I can also take to LAN parties.

Thanks

some laptops have an input for external devices to use its monitor, and if the laptop doesn't have it the docking station probably does.

then you can make a VGA cable, hook it up, and there you go

It is a Sceptre Dragon X9 19''.... its got the best pixel response time and contrast ratio of any LCD on the market (15ms/ 700:1), and folds up quite nicely for transport....plus its inexpensive!

You could probably get a FireWire (or possibly USB 2.0) video capture device.  Pretty expensive tho, around $250 for a good quality one.

If your Inspiron has video-in, then you could use that.  But it will never give any decent picture quality, being composite and all.   But dream on for that VGA in....

Also, were you talking about taking apart your laptops and ripping the screen out and asking if the internal connections would be VGA compatible?  I thought you wanted to keep the laptops in tack, but get the video signal into them.

I believe any kind of USB TV-Card will do the job nicely, such as http://www.hauppage....s/data_usb.html

Just use whatever inputs are on the USB breakout box (S-Video, composite, or antenna probably).

Well your laptop doesn't have any video input.

You could look for a video capture card.  You could try USB but you'd probably have better luck with PCMCIA.  But remember there's a lot of encoding with those methods, so there will probably always be some lag on the screen.  You'll also see additional pixillation as your video stream is converted to MPEG2 (or DV depending on the hardware) on the fly.  Actually if your laptop has FireWire (IEEE1394) you could connect via a miniDV Camcorder if your camcorder supports FireWire passthrough.

Post by: Mr Ed on August 26, 2004, 10:59:00 AM
Well, I haven't done this on Windows, but theoretically, you would connect your XBOX via S-Video/RCA jacks to your camcorder.  Your camcorder would connect to your computer via FireWire.  Set the camcorder to VCR mode, and it should want to record/monitor the video input now instead of the lens.  Then with whatever software you use on Windows to aquire/monitor video across FireWire, you should be able to view the video coming across the FireWire port.

a media center pc will definately have inputs.. dont buy an rf adapter just to use the coax inputs, use the composite, or if it has svideo.. use that

No laptop that I know of has a VGA input port.  That's an output only port.

The only way you're going to be able to view your XBox on your notebook's LCD is by using some form of Video Capture (ie: external capture card, camcorder with usb 2.0/firewire). How well a Video Capture device works depends on many things. However it all comes down to how fast your machine is. If you have a 2.8GHz processor with 512MB of RAM, you're probably safe with buying just a S-Video to USB 2.0 cable. If you have a 1.0GHz with 256MB of RAM, you'll probably want to get a full capture device that does it's own encoding. Either one will not guarrantee that you'll have a smooth picture all the time.

Uh, I'm assuming your friend used a PCMCIA or FireWire or USB 2.0 video input device?

Should be able to do it for around $300.

Remember it's not "normal" for laptops to have any type of video/VGA input, so what you are trying to do is not something the laptop makers design for or expect you to do.

Like they said you'll need a video capture device.  They will have to connect either via FireWire (if you have it) USB 2.0 (if you have it) or the PCMCIA card slot.

You're talking at least $150 for a good quality capture device (cheap ones are $50) and up to $500 for a really good one.

Lastly I think there would always be some video lag with a device like this.

Hi, I was wondering if there's any way i can play my xbox (with the aid of any special converters/cables etc) through my laptop on my laptop lcd screen - the problem being that there doesn't appear to be a video-in port on the laptop. It's a got a external CRT port and a S-Video port, but that seems to be it... (It's a "Radeon IGP 320M" graphics card)

If there isn't any way of doing this, how would I go about playing my xbox through a desktop pc with a standard CRT monitor?

Thanks

I've been looking at the various usb/pcmcia tv tuner options and lag seems to be a problem when trying to play console games on a laptop screen (due to video compression by the tv tuner) - can anybody suggest a laptop-compatible tv tuner that is good for using with the xbox? One that doesn't use video compression? Thanks

I've tried playing my Xbox on my computer screen but it's too damn laggy to play on it (about 1 second of lag)

Capture card I have is an ATI TV Wonder Pro. Are all TV Cards laggy when playing video games through it or does it depend on what card you use?

But since he's on a laptop, he can't change the video card.

Basically there is no way to do that without a video capture card that will digitize and compress the image.  Laptops simply aren't designed to be display devices.  I'm not aware of any laptop that has a VGA or DVI input.

I'm a student, yeah it means I live in a tight space.  No space for a tv really, and not much of a budget.

Is there any way to use my laptop screen as an output?  I know you can watch tv, so would I just need something like a desktop equivalent of an all in wonder card?

Would a video capture card do the trick?  I have yet to find anything with the 3 plugs though

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

You'll have to find a PCMCIA video capture card.  USB video capture isn't fast enough to not have video lag... It takes about 1 second or so before you see anything on the screen.

I want to use my laptop as my monitor but am having problems.  The laptop has S video but I think they are outputs only.   And no video inputs.  I have an aftermarket cable that runs from my xbox and breaks into an s video male part.  Is there a way to reverse the s video with some kind of software or is it a hardware only issue?  Please let me know, thanks guys!

As far as I know there isn't but I could be wrong, but anyways the video input would probably be buffered, so when you move your joystick it might take a second for it to show on your screen.

After 30 seconds of searching... a solution. This thing is MCE-compliant, which means it has a hardware MPEG2-encoder onboard. It shouldn't cause any lag with gaming.

But it would be nice yes...been able to use a portable screen that gets better resolution than a  normal TV...hmm...defenetly good...but then again...never seen this done before. Oh also...err... You'd need to use a cardbus, USB, or FireWire video capture device.  My guess is the lag would make it unplayable.  Merged thread with identical topic.  dry.gif

No its not impossible, and no there isn't lag.  It depends on what you are willing to spend for a tv tuner.  I have a laptop that i used to play my xbox on after i was done basic training.  I have an Avermedia UltraTV usb 300 tuner, and man, it plays like a dream.  Only thing that is kinda shitty is the output for the sound.  I can't seem to get it to play through my laptop speakers so i bought a small set of speakers.   BUT before i did own a cheap ass tuner.  And there wasn't lag with it either.  The only thing was resolution.  It seemed the cheaper one would get all pixelated if you put it to full screen.  The one i have now can go full screen (17") without any kind of pixelation.  Man, its sweet to play on.
