Title: New Xboxes And 480p
Post by: opjose on June 10, 2004, 05:48:00 PM
Are you sure that you have the aspect of the Xbox's output set correctly for your TV?

E.G. that is not set to 16:9 when your TV supports 4:3 or vice versa?

What do the "bands" look like?

My first impulse would be to say that you have a defective video encoder.

But you've already replaced the Xbox.

The MS AV packs work on the newer machines just fine (I have no such problem with a new unit).

So it is likely that you either have an impedance issue occuring between the Xbox and HDTV, or the HDTV's input stages are to blame.

That is unless someone at the place you got the XBox was consistently blowing the machines by hooking them up to something...

This begs the obvious question, was the box totally sealed?

Did it have both the top and bottom round seals in place when you got both boxes?

That said, there is indeed a slight difference in the newer Xboxes.

This has affected some devices such as the X2VGA which had to rewire the connector to overcome this problem.

(on the X2VGA this problem shows up as "wrong" colors however, not bars.).

If the bars are stationary, it's very hard to tell what's up.

If they vary depending upon what you are viewing/doing, it's quite possibly noise, ringing, interference, or impedance mismatch.

For yuks try changing out those monster cables for cheaper ones.

There was a similiar report (but not quite verticle bars) a few weeks ago that was cured this way. They too had monster cables!

Hmm I would say just paint mod your original box then and the fact u have a thompson drive sucks i feel bad for you. i like 1.2's.my friendtech 733 lite with 128mb is awesome and no defects plus upgraded cables with a built in fiber optic port in the cable and extra fans my xbox runs at 54 instead of my old one which ran 130. friendtech is definately the best screw MS and their stock shit.

I'd go with Steve's idea.  Might as well paint your house while you are ordering a Friendtech box.  I like mauvre and big fluffy pillows with tassles on the corners.  Maybe even get one of those raccoon tails and attach it to your Xbox.

Meanwhile...is there any way you could try it on a different television (480p supporting) and/or with a different HD pack?  I really don't know what to tell you.  You are doing everything right but it isn't getting you anywhere.  There isn't too much more you can do to troubleshoot besides swaping the television and HD adapter/cables.

It's quite possible that you may need a NEWER HDEF pack made specifically for later version Xboxes.

X2VGA had a similiar problem with newer Xboxes using the newer encoder chips.

Some circuitry changes had to be made to fix the problem, so it is not inconcievable that there is something similiar required with the HDEF packs.

I just read a post at home theater spot forums where someone with a green Halo box is also having video issues with the Hi Def.

Hmmm.

I run a Dreamcast, Gamecube, & Xbox via my HDTV set w/o any problems.

The Gamecube and Dreamcast are both operating in 480i modes. (Can't find the damn component cables for the Gamecube locally...).

YES!
Thank god.  I've been looking around a good while for someone to mention this.

Can you direct me to a place when i can learn how to correct this problem?  My family has a 1.0 and I loved the x2vga, then got an xbox of my own (1.5) and now I can't use the damn thing.

Rewire the connector.  Sounds kinda scary to tinker with a 65 dollar piece of hardware, but at this point I'm willing to do anything to get the damn thing to work right.

Have you ever heard of any software fixes?

any help is appreciated.
thx,
Bro

X2VGA will take back your old unit and send you a new one.

E-mail them via their web site.

thanks.

I checked their website when I first descovered the problem (a while back), and there wasn't any mention about it.  But now I see they've updated it.

Fancy that.  Thanks a million, man.

Blind as a bat,
Bro out.
