Title: Stereo Headphone On Controller - Tutorial
Post by: Forta-Kon on March 31, 2004, 04:27:00 PM
I know a few people wanted a tutorial on how to make a Stereo headphone jack on your controller... So I just put this together.

Its kinda ruff... so if you have any question or see that I missed something please let me know in this thread so I may correct it... I already noticed I forgot a few words... I will correct the grammar later tonight.

Here is the LINK

Good job on the tut, I definately plan on doing it, but I'm trying to think of a way to make it compatible with the on/off mod

k, I figured out how to do it without giving up the on/off switch on your controller (or if you haven't done it already, you will still be able to).  You use the ground sheilding on in the controller wire.  Its the other black wire in the controller that has heat shrink tubing around it.  wire your on/off to that instead, then in the xbox solder the on/off to the xbox controller port sheilding instead of the yellow wire.  It worked for me, and I assume no responsibility of you messing your box up.

Edit:  I also just realized that this will not work on a regular case without cutting the metal sheilding inside the case so that it does not touch the controller port casing.  It works for me because I dont have my metal sheilding on the sides anymore.  You will only have to do it for the controller port(s) you use the on/off mod with.

Also, you should be able to run one of the audio channels through the ground sheilding, instead of switching the on/off wire, but I don't feel like going through the work just to test it...

How loud is the volume? Does it disable the audio on your TV when you have it plugged in?

Thanks rush and cueball for the ideas! I really did want a power switch as well.

And Ben, The Volume is loud enough to enjoy the game but not as loud as a person might listen to rock music. wink.gif

I tested mine out today, but it doesn't seem to let the right sounds play (and right is the one spliced into the ground\black wire).  I ftped a sound file that has a voice saying right in the right speaker, then left in the left.  When I play it, all I hear in the headphones is left, and depending on how the wires are set up on the jack, it will be in the left, or both speakers.  I tried it while grounding the jack with the black wire , left in yellow wire, and right in the sheilding of the cable, and left and right worked fine.  I was wondering if you have any way to tell if yours is in stereo, and if you do, test it out and tell me the results.  Theres would be no problem with setting it up te way  had it working, except that it would make no possiblity for an on/off switch.

I have not tried it using the shielding cableĀ… and mine is in stereo. I mean it basically going straight from the right and left ear piece to the right and left pins on the Xbox board with a few splices in-between.

Yes I know, but the black cable (ground) that your using cancels out the audio spliced into it.  Or at least that's how it was for me.  all of the wires will be going straight from the board pins to the headphones, but the black wire messes it up.  go into halo and throw a grenade and turn your character right 90 degrees so that the grenade will explode to the left of you.  Does the grenade sound only come out of the left speaker?  Now try it by throwing one and turning left, if it's truely in stereo, it will come out in the right speaker this time.  Both speakers may work, and everything will look like it's hooked up right, but it might not actually be in stereo.  Try it out and notify me, Thanks.

I think Rush346 is right.  You can't get stereo off the small black wire and the yellow wire.  The small black wire is ground.  I put a meter across the small black wire on the main XBOX motherboard and it shows full connectivity to ground.  So when you connect pin 2 to the black wire, you are shorting out right channel to ground.  I think the only way to get stereo is like Rush346 did.  Which means you can't have both stereo headphones and an on/off switch.  Although, You could have MONO headphones and an on/off switch.
