Title: Ms Dashboard Not Digital Audio?
Post by: Foe-hammer on March 02, 2004, 07:21:00 AM
Does the ms dashboard not support digital audio?  When i tried listening to the music ripped on my xbox via ms dash, i could only get analog with the fiber optic cable, not digital.  But as soon as i start a game it switches to digital.  What the crap is up with that?

i don't believe it is.
i have a sound blaster audigy platinum to route the sound from the xbox with optical cable and when i set the input to digital i get no sound from the xbox, but the second a game comes on..a dolby digital symbol pops up on my screen and *bingo*...5.1 sound.

::shrugs:: i hope that helps.

I think it is analogue. I say that because every CD player with a digital O/P is supposed to be able to play DTS CDs. The M$ cannot either from the disc or the HDD, you just get the static noise. Your're right that is abit crap really as I want ed to put some DTS CDs on the HDD along with the other 400 tunes I have on it. sad.gif

Blame M$ and nVidia...the chipset only supports Dolby (what the hell were they thinking?) dry.gif

There has to be away to output DTS audio. I just think that no one has been able to yet. A DVD with a DTS track outputs to a Preamp/DTS Decoder correctly, DTS audio throughput must be possible.

You can't get analog signals across a fiber optic/digital cable.  blink.gif

Well, i'm not getting digital, so what else would it be?  My reciever says optical digital when a game starts up, but when the ms dash is loaded it switcheds to optical 6 channel; not optical digital.  On a side note, i am able to listen to cd's in xbmc in optical digital.

I see, i think.  But, whatever the case optical digital sounds a hell of alot better than optical 6-channel, a lot better.

sure it is!
Dolby Digital 5.1 is compressed audio, just like MP3 - no wonder if you prefer the plain, uncompressed PCM digital for music

for the same reason can you usually find not only DD5.1 sound on music DVDs, but PCM stereo soundtrack as well

No, you miss understood me.  Optical dolby-digital gives a much cleaner, louder, bassier sound than the 6-channel direct setting through the optical out via the xbox.
