When you use a digital audio out on the Xbox, it will "only" work with s-video(?), HD, VGA or SCART. This has to do with the 3 modes on the Xbox (If I recall the mode names correctly, they're Composite Monoaural, Composite Stereo, and Component).

You'd need three switches (there are three pairs of pins to be controlled) wired to the pins underneath the AVIP. These will toggle the modes.
