Title: Best Cheap Surround Sound Option?
Post by: DrwndX on March 16, 2005, 08:37:00 AM
I have the Logitech Z-5300e speakers ( not the best, but i got em cheap).  Is there any way to pipeline my xbox into my pc to feed out my speakers?  i tried doing a y adpater into my input audio port, as well as my mic port and i cant get the sound to traverse through.  it may not be possible, but id like to get any ideas before i give up and just use my old 2.1 system for my xbox speakers.

dont get a package home theatre system, it'll cost less but you wont be satisfied in the long run

for example-distortion rates, the average package system has a 10% distortion rate, where as a a/v reciever usually had a 0.5-0.9% distortion rate

But anyway, I grabbed the Z-680's when they came to market.  If they're still available somewhere cheap, I'd say go for'em.  They pump out a lot of power compared to size, and they're hassle-free to setup.

5.1 DD can only come through a digital cable.  There are 2 kinds Digital Optical and Digital Coaxial.  Optical is obvious to spot, it's figre optic and you can see the little red light when it's hooked up.  Coaxial looks like a fat RCA cable I believe but I don't recall any kind of output adapter for xbox that makes coax digital out.

If you just use the stereo RCA cable setup you are getting Dolby Surround encoding but that is not true 5.1.  Dolby encoding does takes the sound from different soundstages and adds or subtracts them to simulate seperate rear speakers.  It's nice, but get a digital optical system and you will hear the difference.

Ohhhh, ok.  Thanks for the info, I thought whatever you had hooked up, the decoder would divide it into surround sound.

In my personal opinion the RCA RT2006 is the best value for the money. Great sound (for the price) and good set of features including DTS and Prologic 2 decoding.

Logitechs:
Z-680's have Optical/Coax/ and anlong (DD5.1, DTS5.1, DDPLII)
Z-640's I believe only have anlong

You can add Coax Digital to your Xbox, there's a tut for it on X-S's main page.

I currently use the Z-680's on my Xbox..and they're MORE then worth the $249 I spent on them (Way way worth it!) Though tonight I'm gonna play around with my Paradigm ADP 100's on the Logitech reciever and see what happens tongue.gif

What about the Bose freestlye system.  bose website?  Lookes like it might be a smaller and better alternative

Bose is about the worst quality most overpriced system you can get.  Sorry.  sad.gif

You can find equivalent systems for much less or better sounding systems for the same price.

Remember that he said cheap, he didn't ask for small.  Also remember that due to the laws of physics, bigger will always be better (yes small satellites have gotten good, but they can't beat full size speakers).  And if you've already decided you have to go small, you can still do much better than Bose.  I suggest for quality looking at Yamaha.

Seriously, Yamaha TSS10 is about the greatest 5.1 you can get for its price. It's about $200 dollars. Dual optical input, DTS and DPLII, what more can you ask? If you have an average sized room, the TSS10 won't fail you.

if you insist on Logitechs, spend the extra few bucks and grab the z-680's rather than the z-640's. Its a world of difference.

NOTE: MAKE SURE IT HAS OPTICAL INPUT - THERES NO OTHER WAY TO GET 5.1 FOR YOUR XBOX

Or you can get 5.1 sound via plugging the xbox up to a a/v reciever.....The amp in my living room has like 6 spare digital in ports that are all unused. So if you got a av reciever, but the advanced cable for the xbox, plug it in.

tongue.gif )

1 - They're made of cheap paper (lowest grade possible from 3M)
2 - Foam Surrounds (Deteriates after 5-10 years and must be replaced)
3 - Cubes (2.5"-3" speakers CANNOT produce high grade 'hi-fi' sound, it is physicaly impossible to emit enough sound in a standard living room for casual enjoyment w/o destortion)
3 - 'Bass Module' (Bose's very sad atempt at created a 'subwoofer' Their 'Bass Module' contains 3 3"-4" MIDRANGE speakers aimed at the ground. Basicly it reproduces all audio information in the midrage frequencies, and maby slighty below. Using the 3 speakers only adds more sound and volume to move more air out of the port, giving the effect of bass w/o having a clean, sturdy sound or even reaching the frequences of most LFE channels. The SMALLEST speaker used for Subs by Hi-Fi names such as Paradigm, B&W, and Energy is 8". It's the ONLY way to acheive the correct amount of bass, the right volumes, and the lowest frequences. Turn off the Main speakers on a Bose system and listen only to the Module...you can EASILY follow and entire movie...thats NOT the way it should be.)
4 - THX Certifacation (Have you EVER seen ANYTHING from Bose that was ever THX Certified? Now, I fully support THX certifaction because of it's tie-ins to being an Advertizment ploy, but hell...that IS what Bose as a company bascly relies on: Advertizing, marketing. You can't tell me that any Bose speaker or reciever has never been sent to Mr. Lucas for testing. C'mon!)
5 - Frequency (Most of the upper midrange and lower tweater ranges are completely ignored! That means most of the audio information in your movie or music is NOT BEING HEARD! What a freakin RIP!)
6 - Speaker Cabnits (They SUCK...thin pressboard crap that vibrates HORRIBLY and kills sound. All Hi-Fi speakers use some sort of hard solid wood for their cabnits)

So..basicly, Bose is a total insult to the Hi-Fi world, and as an extra lil tidbit, go search for reviews of Bose systems and compare them to the reviews of Logitech Z-680s or Cambrage Soundworks 5.1. Logitech and Cambrage OWN in ratings and pure specs over the speakers made by the assholes at Bose! biggrin.gif
