I just LOVE it.
Well, i need to fully test it and play with all the options, but already, it is damn great. It seems to keep all its promises.

By the way, here is something many people might need. It should avoid most of questions :

| neXgen Christmas Release - Manual            December 25th, 2002 |
------------------------------------------------------------------

FAQ::

Q: What is nexgen?
A: Next question please.

-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Q: How can i use ftp?
A: You can use any ftp client (i.e. flashfxp, cute ftp etc) or use internet explorer as such:

  ftp://xbox:[email protected]:21
  192.168.1.2 = replace with your xbox IP address, :21 = port number (just leave as is)

-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Q: What is the http inhibit?
A: Simply put, in internet explorer put this in your url bar:

  http://192.168.1.2 (or whatever your Xbox IP is). You will be prompted to login.
  From here you can view the status or partitions and such, as well as send commands.
  In the future you will be able to easily clone a hd from here.

-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Q: Can I add menu items to the main dashboard like evoX?
A: Yes. To do this add a line to the nexgen.xml:

   Example:
  <ITEM TEXT="Boxplorer" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="F:\Applications\boxplorer\default.xbe"/>
  <ITEM TEXT="XBMP 2.0" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="E:\Applications\xbplayer\default.xbe"/>
  <ITEM TEXT="Halo" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="F:\games\halo\default.xbe"/>

-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Q: Can I change colors or skin nexgen?
A: Yes. Add 3 color lines to your nexgen.xml::

  <COLOR1 R="64" G="192" B="0"/>
  <COLOR2 R="192" G="255" B="24"/>
  <COLOR3 R="64" G="192" B="0"/>

  These values are rgb values. (red, blue and green channels)
  Color1 is backdrop/crosshairs, 2 is selected menu, 3 is deselected menu

  I currently have an application in development that will do this for you.
  Just pick form a color pallet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Q: Damnit, this xml is confusing, a little explanation please?
A: No....just kidding:

   - To edit the xml use notepad, or a web developer like dreamweaver.
   -Syntax is important, review the example below for correct syntax.
   -The color settings below are default green. (like the ms dash)
   -Search sections can include from 1 to 4 search paths
   -Item Text lines are for adding menus to the main dashboard.
   -These ( are comment tags. Type whatever you want in between.

   An Example of a working "nexgen.xml":

  <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
  <MENU>

  <NOSNOW/>
  <FTP INHIBIT="0" USER="xbox" PASS="xbox"/>
  <HTTP INHIBIT="0" USER="xbox" PASS="xbox"/>

  <SEARCH SECTION="APPLICATIONS" PATH1="E:\Applications"/>
  <SEARCH SECTION="GAMES" PATH1="E:\GAMES" PATH2="F:\games"/>

  <ITEM TEXT="Boxplorer" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="F:\Applications\boxplorer\default.xbe"/>
  <ITEM TEXT="XBMP 2.0" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="E:\Applications\xbplayer\default.xbe"/>

  <COLOR1 R="64" G="192" B="0"/>
  <COLOR2 R="192" G="255" B="24"/>
  <COLOR3 R="64" G="192" B="0"/>

  </MENU>
-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Q: Can I remove the snow?
A: Yes. To do this add a line to the nexgen.xml:

   Example:
  <NOSNOW/>

-------------------------------------------------------------------|

Greets::
   -Xecuter
   -The rest of my squad.

   (hmm, i dont like anyone else, that is all)

Hope this helps

-Zer0

I wan't to change the background sound (no offense to anyone but i hate whatever it is that is playing) and the menus within the storage submenu, that is put an EMULATOR menu there too, and change their order.

besides that i am loving it.

anyone else having problems adding a catagory to the main menu screen? i copied the exact same method posted above but still a no go..

If your games are in specific genre folders like mine are you need to add a line like this
<SEARCH SECTION="GAMES" PATH1="F:\sortedgames\action" PATH2="F:\sortedgames\racing" PATH3="F:\sortedgames\sports" PATH4="F:\sortedgames\various"/>

One thing I noticed is the fact that not all of my applications that show up have names.  Not a big deal atm just wondering if there is a way i can fix that.

Other then that great work (I like the pictures that show up w/ some of the games)   beerchug.gif
Evo-X watch out I think you have some competition.

Seems to me that the dash looks cool and probably has more functions.  But it looks harder to configure for regular people, i guess i will have to try it out myself.  Good work though, looks sick.

Yeah, i followed as above, and nothing happened.  Then I linked neXgen from EvoX and when I loaded neXgen from EvoX then all of a sudden my menu items were available.

Either way, still pretty cool.

I dont understand where it gets its IP from?

I am launching nexGen from evoX right now.... evoX has a place to put the ip address, but the nexGen.xml doesn't. so is it getting its ip from evoX?

I want to make this my default dashboard, but i'm afraid i won't be able to connect to it....

can anyone school me on this, i'm starting to feel a bit dumb... thanks

I had it at default, connected to it fine.  If you're worried about it that much, make a boot cd with evox on it.

Yeah, sorry I can't help you out with the technical details, after all, neXgen is still a work in progress.  I'm sure it'll be implemented in future releases, just gotta wait.

ok this might sound crazy..... but i just made neXgen my new default XBOXDASH.XBE  and i connect to it at 192.168.1.11

I didnt have to use the default ip, the ip i had configured for evoX works fine. evoX must write it somewhere else for general use on the xbox. I connected via ftp and http to this ip. Sooooooo whatev...heh

Just thought i'd put this info out there....

thanks for the sick dashboard guys, its a great addition to my xbox

I think using the http based dashboard is an interesting idea. But at the moment I am failing to see what it has over my current evoX dash other than some 3D animation and silly techno music...

I am all for competition against evoX though, after all that is what fuels progress.

also, if anyone has added another selection menu in the APPS and GAMES section, post how you did it. i copied the line in the xml that neXgen uses to make an emulator section, but it didn't work. I'm not sure if i'm doing it wrong or if the compiled code is not set to read in anymore menus at that level... thanks

first off... I dont know if we are allowed to post where to find it, if we are i will do that....

Second....

Sure this isn't offering anything new except the http access, but it looks SOOOO much cooler, and really... isn't that what its all about?

Post by: sky131 on December 24, 2002, 10:53:00 PM
It does not look much cooler if you have put some time into making your own evoX skin. But I do know what you mean. It is a lot slicker out of the box, but in my world, it is what is under the hood that counts.

For people having trouble getting the main window screen to have a custom boot item make sure you are closing the tag. I think the example in the ini file doesn't close their tag...

For example:

<ITEM TEXT="XBMP 2.0" ACTION="Launch_Custom" PARAM="F:\APPLICATIONS\XBMP2.0\default.xbe"/>

The last slash says that their is no tag to follow.

Post by: sky131 on December 24, 2002, 10:59:00 PM
I think it would be grand if you had the opportunity to tweak everything via the .ini file.

For example I don't like the MS DASHBOARD link being their by default and not being able to get rid of it, and this music is killing me.

Post by: sky131 on December 24, 2002, 11:01:00 PM
Anyone else have a buggy "OPEN TRAY" feature? When I hit the link my XBOX sounds like it is trying to open the tray, then it crashes.

Also, why do you need the open tray feature anyway? You would have to physically put a new disc in anyway. I guess it does save a few seconds during that arduous 6 foot walk to the XBOX. Haha. Gotta shave as many seconds as possible.

QUOTE (SeasonOfFire @ Dec 25 2002, 06:03 AM)
Something I figured out (for those having problems with configurations)....

If an example of one of your applications is C:\applications\boxplorer\default.xbe
make sure you configure nexgen.xml without the trailing slash
example:
<SEARCH SECTION="APPLICATIONS" PATH1="C:\applications">
AND NOT
<SEARCH SECTION="APPLICATIONS" PATH1="C:\applications\">

Also, if you had a game located at F:\Halo\default.xbe
you would want the following:
<SEARCH SECTION="GAMES" PATH1="F:"/>
AND NOT
<SEARCH SECTION="GAMES" PATH1="F:\"/>
the trailing slash will make it NOT WORK.

So yeah, hope that helps someone. The trailing slash screwed me over for awhile because i was trying PATH1="F:\" rather than the correct PATH1="F:"

But dont forget the final trailing slash which is not shown in the .ini file.

Good looks SeasonOfFire

More interesting obvious items...

When you connect via FTP their are folders: H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,X,Y,Z

Folders H-O are not found, but X,Y, and Z open...

the status screen on the http dash does a little play by play of what is going on with the ftp.

Like what is connected and what has failed, etc.

One last buggy item from my "buggy item flood"

When you scroll through a long list of items, games for example, there is a slight hang in the scrolling and audio ever so often.

I am sure most of these are known items and I am being an annoyance.

HAPPY KWANZA. WORD!

ME=RETARDED ON THE FOLDERS

X,Y,and Z are always there (at least if you got the HDD replaced)

But the H-O folders are a little odd...

I don't understand why people are so impressed by this release. It has a lot of flaws and is *very* incomplete. You only have a minimum amount of configuration options. The music doesn't fit to a x-mas release at all and is very annoying. Auto-Items doesn't give a name to about 20% of my tools, so neXgen is absolutly useless until a lot of bugs are fixed.

Maybe next year it's time to change to neXgen, but for now stay with EvolutionX and save your time.

Post by: William Odmiecks on December 25, 2002, 12:01:00 AM
I have two versions of the DVD-X2 Region-Free Player, one for Standard Mode and one for Progressive Mode.

I hex-edited the title of the program in the XBE so I could distinguish between the two, but after changing it, my customized title no longer showed.

I sure as hope they didn't embed all the current XBE filenames and/or titles within the Dashboard, because that would mean that everytime someone releases a new program, version, or whatever, the neXgen dashboard has to hardcode the change into its own XBE, and we'd have to wait for their release as well?!

The music should be customizable and not be embedded with the XBE.

I also have a DVD Playback Kit, but when I pop in a movie DVD, it doesn't auto-launch, and if I choose the unnecessarily hardcoded "MS DASHBOARD" option, it goes right back to the neXgen dashboard - without loading my customized XML.  That bug is kinda like EvolutionX's Dashboard bug where it would fail to load the EVOX.INI file and show its internal default menu selections and settings.  I changed my screen to green and shut off the snow, but when I launched "MS DASHBOARD," i got the blue neXgen dashboard WITH SNOW.

I'd really like to use this, but we'll have to wait until all the major bugs are tapped out.

Kudos to the team/individual who put this together...  Great job so far!

Maybe this will get the fire under the EvoX team to step their dash up a notch. I agree with William that NEXGEN is definitely not superior to EvoX. Or maybe should I say that it is not superior yet...

I definitely think if they are planning to assume the role of an all-encompassing dash, then they need to implement a BIOS FLASH feature. Otherwise we still gotta go back to EvoX to flash our bios. Heck the X-Ecuter crew are the guys that make the best bios so they must be planning on this, right?...

Looks like the music can be shut off in the newest release.

I was trying to run it from the F partition using a modified X2 color mod bios but nothing seemed to work.  I just recieved a error 13. The first release today at least started from the F partition.  The new release would not even do that. After I moved it the C it works fine now.

Looks like a nice dashboard but it really has a incomplete "feel" to it.  I think this is going to be a great when they are finished.

rolleyes.gif  Geez!!!

Second of all, for those who want very close color scheme to orignal you can use the xml code from neXgen first beta release..

<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
<menu>

                 <COLOR1 R="64" G="192" B="0"/>
                 <COLOR2 R="192" G="255" B="24"/>
                 <COLOR3 R="64" G="192" B="0"/>

Just Cut and Paste this between <menu> and

Turn off snow <nosnow>
Turn off music <nomusic>
Turn ON sound <sound>

And you have a VERY good idea what to expect on the OFFICAL release of this dash.. Looks SWEET, and am VERY Excited to see what will be next...  beerchug.gif

PS. You can add a button on neXgen and Direct it to evo-x for those of you who are upset
that neXgen DEMO doesn't have all the features as evo-x..  What do you people want... LOL !

PPS. I do have a couple suggestions for the next release though... The "X" logo seems to be
a bit off centered to me.. Also, my "MS DASHBOARD" button doesn't take me to the dash, it just flashes and goes back to neXgen dash. maybe you could allow us to direct that button to whatever we renamed the orignal dash to ... In my case its renamed "MS-Dash".. Keep up the FANTASTIC work !!!

First of all I would like to comment to those people who say they arn't impressed and that the dash is incomplete.... YEAH DUH... ITS A DEMO... demo

n. dem·o
pl. dem·os

    a.) A demonstration, as of a product or service.
    b.) A brief tape or recording illustrating the abilities of a musician or other performer.

That would explain why its not complete....  :rolleyes:  Geez!!!

I don't recall seeing any official declaration that this is a DEMO? I understand this is the Release Beta. A demo that allows the public to start playing with settings and Cofiguring could lead to major problems.

This is a release neXgen v0.91c . not a demo.

After playing around with it for a while, I found an easy fix to get MS Dashboard to work.

It looks for msxboxdash.xbe rather than xboxdash.xbe

I just copied it and renamed it so I have both, so everything works fine when I turn off my chip.

This would be one feature it would be nice to be able to change. Something like
<msdash = "xboxdash.xbe"/> or something along those lines.

Otherwise, I think it's a great dash.

PS. IGR through the dash is stupid, and if put in, should have a disable option.

Ok here it goes xbox version 1.0 using xecuter 4973 bios and new 80 gig hard drive. no evox installed just nexgen as my dash. i am connecting to my xbox using a crossover cable directly to my pc nic card. as far as i can see unlike evox i cant set a static ip so how do i ftp to my xbox using flash fxp. my nic card on my pc is set to ip address 192.168.0.1  subnet mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.0.1. now with evox all i did was set a static ip 192.168.0.3 and i could use that with flash fxp to connect. with next gen if i can assign a static ip to my xbox how do i connect????

any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanx

Hey got it working just installed evox on hard drive with ini and the used nexgen as my main dash and no problem i can ftp to nex gen. i really didnt want it to ftp xbe file or games  just to transfer the xml back and forth playin with  the settings.

This is an awesome dashboard and just like to say who ever made this did an OUTSTANDING
job !

Would like to know how the hell it gets the thumbnail when showing games where the hell does that come from got a thumbnail for all my games except snesx newest version.

yeah also i noticed the i tried to delete files and folders using flash fxp and nexgen and it went thru the deleting process but folders would not delete.

Thanx

I'm fairly sure it gets the thumbnail pics from the saves on the hard drive. If you look in the saves with the original M$ dash, they use the same pics. Also, i can't get nexgen to work as xboxdash.xbe, I always get the error 13 when i rename it and restart the xbox. It doesn't make sense.

i got it to boot from xboxdash.xbe then. I think the nexgen ftp was corrupting it, i must have re-sent it when i booted nexgen previously. Evox ftp works for sure so i got it to work later. Nexgen is not worth it yet.

that isn't a bug, you're supposed to rename the MS original dash to msxboxdash.xbe, that's why evolution x does it also.

Here's a copy of my nexgen.xml file. It's not fantastic, but might help some of you out.
