Title: Dpi For Back Ground
Post by: dman7 on June 28, 2004, 02:19:00 PM
I'm makeing a skin for MXM. It's going to have a static background...what I am doing is scanning a portion of a cd cover and blowing it up to 640x480 pixels. Does the dpi have to be 72 or can it larger?

Thanks,
-dman

Well, when scanning, it's always best to scan a much larger resolution (like 1600x1200), then resize the image with anti-aliasing (perhaps after cleaning up the image with some filters).

DPI really doesn't matter too much - it's in relation to the size of the original material, after all. Once it's encoded into a file, there is no relation to the file, really, except for printing and publishing-type apps.

Of course, DPI matters when scanning.... you want to use a LOT of DPI, then shrink the image down, as I said before, for the best quality.
