Post by: jabba the hump on April 09, 2005, 08:57:00 AM
I have recently purchased a Optical out Advanced Scart Cable. to use on XBOX with my AV Reciever.
Every thing is fine when playing DVDs with Dolby Digital enabled but when i play games the centre speaker is not outputing any sound but i get sound when dolby digtal is'nt enabled and the AMP switches to pro logic II.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you're playing a game that supports dolby digital... not all of them do. <

The optical o/p is NOT at fault in any shape or form. It does not pass 6 channels of audio and thus cannot remove the centre channel. If DVDs work perfectly and your amp actually displays all the correct symbology for DD etc, then I would say the XBOX is at fault. How and why is unknown, but thinking about it and IMO, the xbox is simply not seeing the DD flag from a game. I'm guessing that you use an alternative DVD player? <

Bit of clarification is needed. Does the AV Receiver display DD when a game is used? Is it just DD by itself?, or is it accompanied by PCM also? And are you referring to DVD's played back via the Xbox? or a seperate DVD player?

Usually its the receiver that does not autoswitch when it sees the DD flag. When you bootup the Xbox, the flubber will play in PCM stereo, then the receiver should automatically switch to DD as the game launches. Are you observing this change? If not, try manually selecting DD on the receiver. <

I just tried setting my dashboard to Stereo and my receiver displays DD, but I have got audio from the left and right speakers only.

I would guess that the settings in the dash have not being set correctly. Check the dash audio setting to see that you have chosen Dolby Surrround and enabled Dolby Digital.

You don't mention if you are using a modded Xbox? If you have another dashboard like XBMC that has its own audio settings, then try and eliminate that from your testing, as it could be conflicting with your MS dash settings.

I would like to thank fahrenheit for his help in solving my problem.

There was conflicting settings in XBMC.

But another thing that did not help was the fact that one of the games i was testing with does not ouput to all speaker in the menu stages and only kicks into suround when in the game itself.

MS rallisport 2 is DD suround from the start through all the opening screens and in game if i had known this i might have solved problem sooner.

cheers again
