Not too sure what your cable is but is sounds like a straight thru cable. It need to be a crossover when going between PC and Xbox directly.

It will look exactly the same it is just some of the connections inside the plug are 'crossed over'. It is still an ethernet/cat5/rj45 cable (a few names it could be called)

That's correct. You probably have a "straight-through" or normal cat5 or cat5e ethernet cable. I'm sure its a good cable but it doesn't connect two clients together. You could use that cable if you were going to a switch or hub but since you want to connect pc direct to xbox you want to go to the store and buy the same cable but it'll say crossover on the box. It won't look any different to you but the internal wiring is different.

keep the gateway blank or if you put the gateway as 192.168.0.1 then make your pc ip 192.168.0.3 if your xbox ip is 192.168.0.2
