Title: Little Ip Question
Post by: GaijinPunch on June 02, 2003, 08:52:00 PM
Sorry if this should go in newbie chat - seems like IP config is an EvoX issue, so I figured it would go here.

After waiting almost an eternity, I finally got my modchip in the mail.  The bad news, however, is that they apparantly don't sell desoldering braids ANYWHERE in Japan, so I had to order one from Radio Snatch.  So until that comes, I'm just checking up on some stuff.

I've read the basic "networking your PC and Xbox" tutorials and EvoX tutorials, and it seems to me that they all suggest that you set your PC-NIC to 192.168.0.1.  I do know for a fact that I've got a static IP (5 actually).  I've got 3 PCs, a Gamecube, and an Xbox.  I could find out the PCs IPs easily enough, turn off the Xbox, ping the 4th of my 5 IPs to find the GC's IP, then the last one is the Xbox's.  So, in short, what I'm asking is is it okay for to use the 5 static IPs I've got?  I'm kinda lazy and would rather not change my IP everytime I need to connect to my box.

I think you have to use one of your static ip's. What ever computer you connect your xbox to, you should use that ip.  If I'm wrong I'm sure someone here will correct me.

Title: Little Ip Question

Ok lets remove a layer of confusion
192.168.0.X is a internal numbering set (Not public ip), so you should be able to have 254 addresses you can chouse from. Your hub, router, or switch may have 5 eathernet ports but you can connect another hub or switch and get more. As to your pc being 192.168.0.1 it all depends on how your internet connection is set up, typicaly a router is setup to be X.X.X.1 on a home network. As long as there are no duplicate ending number set then you should be fine.
You can double check the ammount of ip addresses by checking the subnet if it is 255.255.255.0 then 192.168.0.1 throught 192.168.0.254 is your local lan. =^.^=
Good luck hope this helps

I know how 192.168.x.x IPs work... the thing is, my NICs on my 3 PCs use 5 of my external WAN IPs.   I don't want to change from my real static IPs to fake internal ones everytime I want to copy stuff to my xbox.

I guess the question is, does EvoX/Xbox/all-that-jazz support any IP as long as it follows the rules of networking.  IE - PC & Xbox on the same subnet, which they would be since they get all that crap from my ISP.
