Title: Can Still Use The Xbox Controllers On Xbox2?
Post by: OR-G on October 06, 2004, 08:47:00 PM
Just curious if they've said anything about it. Cause buying 4 controllers all over again is expensive.

I wonder if they'll force you to buy the remote to watch DVDs

Theoretically, if M$ really wants to, they can make the ports backwards compatible.  But, I guess we wont know until next year......

lol.

I really doubt they will have that for the controllers.

Would be nice saving me having to do the controllers again.

Sony kind of added backwards compatibility.  Remmber how you could us the dual-shock PS1 controllers in a PS2.  Just something to think about.

but M$ wants to make money so there would be no point

If they didn't make the controllers backwards compatible, we'll be the first to make an adapter that will.

Provided the algorithms don't change.

if they use usb connections it will be simple to modify the box or the controller to make the old ones usable on the new box

unless they change the usb to send different data signals or suttin, so they original xbox controllers won't be recognised. if they are changing the controller so much like i heard, you wouldn't be able to use an old one neway!

The new controllers don't seem that much different.  It just sounds like the Black and White buttons are being mapped to two additional trigger buttons instead of being where they are now.

It's all M$'s decision.  Considering that the current controllers require propietary drivers, it wouldn't be a huge leap of faith to suppose that M$ would change them enough that the old controllers wouldn't work.  But, they might get nice, lazy, or possibly some combination of the two.

Really MS is a money pig that will try to get as much money out of anything that they can.  So I think that they will have seperate controlers.

Maybe they'll support both, but only when emulating the original xbox.  That way you can use the orginal controller.

True, but when you're already paying 300+ for the Xbox, a measley 40-60 bucks isn't that bad.  Don't complain if you have to buy controllers if you are paying for the system itself.

I paid $70 a piece for those logitec controllers.  I would hate to see $140 worth of controllers go to waste.

i think it will be the same as what sony did.  make the controllers usable, but add new buttoms and features to the new one, so its possible but not to ur advantage to use the old one.

Nintendo has managed to change their controllers with each system.

And no one has really complaned.

And when you think about it, each controller has been something new or special:

Original - nothing new, because there was nothing to change!
SNES - Shoulder buttons, YX buttons
N64 - 3 prong design, C buttons, Z, 2 pads
GCN - funky L R buttons, odd Z placement, rotatable C buttons

I don't like the idea of four triggers.  I personally like the current XBOX controllers, but I would also welcome a change.  I guess that means I am undecided.  I just don't want the triggers to not be triggers like PS2 (which were obviously buttons, and had no feel of triggers to them).

It would be great if they were different controllers with different connectors, as long as the breakaway is the same, that way you can just swap out from the breakaway cable.  I think that is what tonloc79 was getting at.

Exactly my man!! wink.gif  That would be great but if they change the controller design at all then theres really no point to the old controllers unless they find a smart way to where both controllers are fully functional!

I am just saying it would be good if the only thing they changed was the position or the type of black and white button (makingthem triggers, or some other kinds of buttons).  That way the function would still be there, just in different design.

I think it will still be some specific MS controller connector.  Even if it is still USB, they can make sure that not everyone is going to just plug in some sort of USB device that does a soft mod and there you go.  I mean, I like not having USB ports.  I like the current ports for style too (even if they are USB at heart).

yeah with the way MS describes their new controllers it looks like it'll be USB definitely. Though we might need an adapter if we want to use the old controllers.

MS has certainly gone the way of trying to "suck money out of you". Its pretty clear what their intentions are for the most part. As long as they can get money and cover their ass from the law then they'll probably go ahead with doing that.

Even though I don't like how MS tries to get every penny from users, it's still a good way of doing business.

Technically the could make the old controllers work if the new trigger buttons were wired to the old black and white buttons.  However, games would be difficult to play if you needed to get to those buttons as they suck where they are now.

Either way M$ said you can plug the stuff into a Windows PC.  They may mean that you need an adaptor, but I doubt it.  I'm guessing that the new controllers will be pure USB 2.0

I keep seeing USB 2.0 mentioned in this thread, and all I have to ask is WHY?

Do you guys not understand what USB 2.0 is or something?  It's not a new connector for one thing.

USB 1.1 theoretically transfers data at 11 megabits per second.  USB 2.0 is nothing more than a speed up to Firewire-like speeds of 480mbps.

USB is backwards and forwards compatible.  You can plug a USB 1.1 device in to a USB 2.0 port, and it will work fine.  Same with the other way around, although it will be limited to USB 1.1 speeds.

The Xbox 1 controller transfers 20 bytes per refresh.  This is 160 bits, so in theory, the Xbox controller could refresh over 70,000 times per second without maxing out the USB 1.1 data capabilities.

The only reason there would ever be USB 2.0 to the controllers is if MS decides to keep the memory cards in the controllers and wants to give us faster access to them.  Even then, the Xenon would still be fully capable of recognizing Xbox controllers, at least in hardware.

Whether MS will support the Xbox controller plug or support old controllers in software is another matter entirely.

Ya know, interesting factoid here...

The NES and SNES used the same communication protocol.  Just a different connector.
I don't know much about the GCN's controllers, but I'd assume that it is similar, though obviously clocked up to handle the extra bytes from the new analog stick and any analog buttons.

They could get away with USB 1.1 ports, and really all a current XBox controller port is USB at heart.

However, I think it will use a standard USB connection because they said you can plug XBox peripherals directly into a Windows PC.
