To anyone who can figure this one out:
I took a spare 40gb 7200rpm Maxtor DiamondMax ata66 HD from my computer and ran hdprepa on it, selecting the format first 4096 sectors. I had premade a EvolutionX boot disk that i know worked. I installed the HD into the xbox, making aure all connections wre good but it would not boot to the evox cdrw but it will with the original HD. I then tried"zero"ing the entire drive but it still wouldnt work. i even tried erasing the whole hd partition but still no luck after "zero"ing.
I dont know wtf the problem is. i have done everyhting connrectly. is it this specific hard drive that will not work? any suggestions? Im in windows XP if that helps for whatever reason.
thanx all

I already tried both Master and Cable select as well as slave too. anyone????
-
An X-ecuter... fully supports evox... so what could it b?
-
Maybe its because its only ata66.
A bit of a shot in the dark , but I can't see any other reason.
A little tip, if you do fit drives that have been used before, then you must zero the whole drive !
-
even tho my drive is ata 66, not 100... does xbox use ata100 anyhow?
-
aha... mabye this is it... does anyone know whats the newest version or Hdprepa. I have v1.3....could it be b/c its an old build?
-
Oh, and the latest HDPrep is 1.3, so you're fine there.

when u say the xbox won't boot the new hd, what happens excactly?
how are you trying to boot the evoX cd?
-
Make sure you have f: turned on in evoX, i dont know if you can even get to that in your situiation though, just a thought. Took me ages to find out why my new 80 gig drive was still only been detect as a normal drive, just 1 friggin setting, arrrr!
-
for who asked: I am booting from a burned evox cdrw disc. ALSO: Anyone who can hook me up with a dvd-r Evox disc if i supply you with my custom evox.ini file, i'd pay ya for it. contact me at [email protected]
if anyone else has had a similar problem, please post!
-
flashback, yes i am... do you8 know something i can do??
-
oh and im using evox v1.8.2594 which uses the evox.ini file
-
anyone?
-
Flashbak....when you say that your not using a menu.ini does that mean the only file u have burned is the default.xbe?
-
Not the easiest or quickest method but it should work:
Start over.
Reprep the HD, follow the guide exactly. Use a CDRW to do the initial boot of Evox. If it won't load it then install another drive (PC DVD Drive) to read the Evox disk.
-
Ya and make sure it is a decent dvd drive, because it will not work with all dvd drives, also make sure you set the jumpers right on both drives.
-
Guys,
Why make him go through replacing the DVD drive? All XBox's read CDRW disc's you just have to try different media if that is the issue. gerzand, before replacing the HD were you able to boot off of this same DVD drive with CDRW media?

Ok. Heres some more info on my problem. Last night i tried a few things. First of all this HD is fully zeroed out.
I burnt 3 different CD-RWs to try: 1) evox .1.8.2 with the default.xbe and evox.ini on it. 2) evox 1.8.2 with only the /Bios folder and default.xbe on it. 3) I burnt the evox 1.8.4 ISO
I then installed the 40gb HD into the xbox. stuck each CD into the drive one at a time, testing the HD in both Mast and Cable Select mode for each CD-RW.
To my FRUSTRATION, none of the cd's worked. I dont know if this plays a role in my problem, but it seems as this is happening during bootup: When the power button is hit after the cd is in the drive and the xbox had been powered off, the HD seems to not be fully booted up (meaning the RPMs are not at full speed) before the Service Screen comes up. This is also the same case with the DVDrom. The drive doesnt seem to hesitate recognizing the disc, but it just cant get set in time before the Service Screen appears. I have tried each disc several time. Is there something I am doing wrong?
I have left as much detailed info as i can think of, but tell me if u need something else

so anyone know?

i had this exact same problem. it turns out my CDRW mysteriously went bad after previously working. it took me so damn long to figure out because it didnt make sense.
what i did to solve it was to do a full erase on the CDRW then burn the ISO again.
magically it worked and i was able to install my 40gb drive.

I have a good disc so it is not that. I am just dumbfounded. Oh well, I guess I will do without. All I would use that space for is game saves anyway.
