Title: 20 Dallor Xbox

Ok so my friend asks me if i want to buy his old xbox off him for 20 bucks it powers up and comes on with the service error. So i open it up check cable. Then power back out and hear a noise almost like something is rubbing against something and it is coming from the hardrive. So i was wondering if i could switch the harddrive that is in my xbox right now and put it in this new one to see if it will work. Or will it mess it up with having a different hardrive in there. Plus if i can't do that are there anyother ways to check my harddrive to see if that is the problem. Thanks in advance.

No i want it. I was just wondering if i could test it by putting in my other hardrive that i no works. But i just looked at llama repair. And found out what error it was and it was number 7 shows up on screen. So it says HDD timeout and i guess that means my harddrive is died.

unplug the yellow cable from the dvd drive and boot it up , no noise that its not the hd

You cant switch out hd's that easy, each one has it's corresponding mobo.

Ok so now i no that it is the HDD. But i looked at llama and there HDD for say said that you can't just swap those ones in you have to put a mod chip in it to do that. But for right now i don't feel like chipping it yet. So i think i am going to look in the buy and sell forum and see if i can't pick one up. But i was just wondering about you side the HDD correspond with the Mobo so does that mean i have to have the same harddrive that is in there right now.

Basically you want to look for a HDD/Mobo combo. You find them on ebay and a few other places, maybe llamma I havent looked there. :)

Well im am kinda new to replacing stuff but my HDD doesn't have anystickers or anything on it so i was wondering what kind it was here is a pic if you could tell me which kind it is that would be great.

You must either have the HDD that is locked to that xbox motherboard (which is fried), or you need to put a chip in the xbox so it will boot an unlocked HDD.

So, your only choice is to chip it (or desolder the eeprom, and put that eeprom chip in a modded box, format and lock a harddrive, then put that HDD and the eeprom chip back in the other xbox)

Ok thanks now i get it. I wasn't understanding that the HD is locked to the MOBO thanks for clearing that up.

Get yourself a cheap modchip, you can probably find one for $20-30 in the buy/sell/trade forum. If you haven't used a soldering iron before, you could buy a modchip with a solderless adapter, so basically one screw will hold the modchip to the motherboard.

Since the xbox motherboard is locked to the harddrive, you can't just switch the hard drive. The modchip will let you bypass that protection the xbox has. You can go to circuit city or wherever, and pop in a 120 gb drive, and you can store/run games from your hd as well. For $20 anyways, you can't go wrong heh. Can always resell the parts for more.

Ya that is the way i am leaning towards as of right now. But i was wondering can i play on live with that modchip because i no you can with modchips but i didn't no if i had to have the modchip on all the time since the HDD will not be locked to the MOBO or will the modchip let me do that?

once you put the modchip in, then the hard drive, you have to lock the HDD back, you can't go on live with an unlocked HDD modchip or not, also you have to turn the chip off, or use live blocking depending on the chip/bios combo you use, either way you have to lock the HDD back after you're done with the install even if you take the modchip back out afterwards the HDD has to be locked back. hope this helped

man, you guys are telling him to things that are way to hard, and actually will be quite stupid to do...

desolder the eeprom??? sell it for ram chips?

the bios boots fine, and the stock seagate is trashed... (its an original seagate)

all you need to do is get a 3b mod chip and a slayers disc, or a 4th gen chip and thats it.

i can install the new HD for you if you dont want to mod it.. reaplcement 10gb drive and locked and tested. wont work for live, unless the box is virgin, or you get a new eeprom.
