Just open up your xbox and look for your bios.. and pull the sticker off..

The only way to tell is to try hitting eject while in a game. If it resets, you have 2.2, otherwise, it's 2.1

2.1 doesn't have the no-patch hack, right? So another way would be to try and use a backed up Xbox game without a patch. If it works, you've got 2.2.
