But yes, the .wma doesn't appear to be proprietary, as I played them on my windows 98 machine easily.  I do wonder if you could rip lower bitrate wmas and copy them to the box and have them play properly.  The only problem is that the songs title info is stored in a separate database file not the wma file itself (like mp3s with id3 tags), so I don't know how the box would handle ripped wmas.

I'm guessing that would be the problem.

You need the same bitrate, first.  Second, the WMAs aren't recognized unless you do it through MS Dashboard.

the file st.db seems to be the database file for wma ripped audio tracks on the xbox hdd. (in /E/TDATA/fffe0000/music/st.db on my xbox) if you open it with a text editor you can see where it stores the id tag of each wma, but unfortunately the file contains xbox code that text editors cant read. maybe someone can create an xbox audio database editor to properly use this file. it seems that it would be simple enough to use the XBOX adpcm or wma codec to convert any mp3 to wma and just ftp it over to the xbox hdd.
burning mp3s to cdrw and ripping them through the x-dash gets combersome after a while.

I created several files using WMA workshop and copied to the Amped aduio Direcotry with the same file names as the orignials and they worked fine.

My Amped plays Metallica, P-Diddy, Poison and others with no problems.

Just convert wavs to wma.

The folder you seek is "e:\TDATA\fffe0000\music\". The problem is that it uses a database to read the files inside. So #1 you have to first you have to have at least one cd ripped from the dash. Then you go to the dash and make copies of the files you allready ripped. What that does is put more files in the database. When made enough copies of the tracks from the first cd say 600 tracks or how many wma you plan to import. The go to
"e:\TDATA\fffe0000\music\" and check out the dummy files (*.wma) that we made so that the database will reconize the files we plan to replace them with. Now all you have to do is rename your wma files to match the dummy files (*.wma). Now use ftp and replace the dummy files with your real music files. Now your done!

If you got some extra time go to the dash and rename each track with the full names!

I did this for about 80 songs before Media Player 5 Beta came out. I know that it works!
