Hey guys, I've modded a few boxes for myself in the past using a chameleon and then the TSOP. I know my way around the Xbox enough to get pretty much anything done, especially with the help of tutorials.
Here's my problem...I was given an xbox the other day that the owner said didn't work. It used to work great, but one day...no dice.
When you press power, it powers on for a second with green light, shuts off, comes back on with green light, pauses, then the light flashes orange and red back and forth til i turn it off.
Has anyone experienced this? What could cause this? What are my options?
Thanks for any replies...

UPDATE: I just walked in, powered it on, and it booted with the MS BIOS. Since i don't have any drives hooked up, I got an error code 7 or something.
After turning it off it was back to the same problem.

UPDATE AGAIN:
Ok, last night it got to the point where it would boot consistently. I went to bed, this morning it would not boot, just that same blink error (described above).
I did some careful looking at the motherboard and found what appears to be a over cooked component.

Does anyone know what this component is? Is it easy to replace?
If anyone knows anything about this please reply! Thanks...

same thing happend to me. you just have to solder a couple of points. If you look closely on the tutorial page of xbox-scene.com you will find the tut your looking for
 :D

Did you have that same error....and it go away after your replacing that component?
-
anyone know what that component is?
-
That component is a capicitor , not sure about the number of the component.
Its most likely its a capicitor, i dont see resistors out and about but it could be a square resistor in disguise. B)

i say get a friend or wtv to take that off one of old mobo's and replace it with yours... safer than over riding it.

I have a pre-production prototype of the xbox...the motherboard is a little different but that component looks the same. I think I'll try using it.

Any luck getting it to work? I'm curious because that component on my xbox looks like it's burnt (well all black) compared to the others beside it and thought it was normal.
I have an xbox with the same symptoms and at first thought the same thing, the component being burnt but after comparing with another mobo, figured it was normal.
-
Actually, before doing any de-soldering i checked all my other boxes. That component looks a little more than medium rare on each of them too.
Back to the beginning...not sure what the error is about. If I sit there for an hour and do nothing but power it on and off.....eventually it boots normal and will boot normal for about 8 or 9 boots.....then back to the error.
Frustrating.
If anyone figures out what causes this, please post it!

The Plot Thickens!!!
Ok, here's a new development. I just found out that this xbox is a failed attempt to mod. The previous owner (no electronics experience) tried to install a solder-free modchip but never got it to work. He removed the chip, and walaah, the error appeard.
Apparrently whatever happened was not the result of standard xbox operation, but a botched mod job.
Has anyone had these symptoms after a failed mod attempt?

Solder free....Only thing I can suggest is to check to see if your D0 trace is broken, or if any other lpc traces are broken. There isnt really alot to solderless mods so that kinda helps to narrow it down.

the only time i`ve had that happen to me is when there is no bios
so if there is a chip resolder worked 4 me
if no chip, put one in and it will replace original bios (that is wiped or messed up)

The only thing that troubles me with that explanation (no bios) is that it does indeed boot every once and a while. There's GOTTA be a good bios on there somewhere!
