Title: Crimping Round Network Cable
Post by: Crypty on September 12, 2004, 01:54:00 PM
My dad got me about 300 feet of free cat6 network cable from his office. It's the round kind and I need to cut it to 100 feet and put connectors on it. How the hell do you put connectors on round wire? I have the tool. I stripped the wires inside to the right lengths and threaded them into the connector then crimped it but 2 of the wires are the same color. So I used a continuity tester to make sure I had the wires in the right order for the next crimp and 2 of them caused it to light up!!! ERRR. sO MY FIRST CONNECTOR HAD 2 WIRES TOUCHING. Now I have to start over. The tool I have is made for flat wire but how do you do it with round wire? There has to be a better way.

You dont strip the individual wires, just the main jacket.  Strip off about 1/2" of the main jacket, line up the wires in proper order, trim it so they are all the same length, then push it in the connector and crimp!  The individual pins have barbs on them that pierce through the insulation on aech of the wires to make the connection.  This will keep you from having any shorted wires!  Also, google is your friend! http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/network/cable/cable8.htm

Ok so new problem. I got the cat6 to the right lenth(like 60 feet) and crimped both ends with the tool so they have the rj45 connector. It was hard to do because 2 of the wires were the same color but i finally got it right. I then checked the continuity on both ends and there were no shorts or crossed wires at all. BUT WHY WONT IT WORK? I plugged it into my router and the other end to my xbox. The green LAN led on the back wont light. It just doesnt work. Though my 25 foot cat5 works just fine(got off e-bay premade).

Is it because this is a cat6? I thought it would be compatible. I have tried it in 2 routers and made sure it is not a problem with the port it was plugged into. So where is the problem? Is it my xbox or my router that is not compatible with the cat6?

Some cat6 I've seen has a bearer wire in it for added strength, you may have crimped that instead of the correct wire, but if it is the same at both ends it should still work, and as for your continuity test, even if the cable is broken you can still get enough induction though the wire so it will seem like it's connected, use a network cable tester, also did you check anywhere on the net for instructions on making network cables?

Could it be that I have he wires arranged wrong? I didnt arrange them in any specific order because I thought they were all pretty much the same thing. 8 strands of the same kind of wire. So I just made sure they lined up on both ends. On some tutorials it tells you what order to put them in.
Does it actually matter?

No it doesn't matter what order they are in as long as they are EXACTLY the same at both ends.  Although I would reccomend working to a standard, preferably the standard of your country.
