i realize this is an old thread (and all the tabboo that implies for some people...
), but i've been thinking about this myself, and i was wondering...could you hit this problem from the other angle? what i mean is, is there code for the xbox (for any dash, not just universal, i mean, but at all) that could recognize fat32 or NTFS-formatted drives? i mean, i understand that you cant do that with your primary drive, but is there any reason you couldn't with a usb-attached hard drive?
also, i dont speak for the other individual on here, but for me, it seems like speeds would be increased with the hard drive connected directly to the xbox rather than through a network, especially in a case like mine, where the network is usually busy with other traffic...
anyway, open to suggestions, corrections, etc

i believe XBMC can regonise fat32 but i am not sure and i think there is a size limitation to the size of the hdd too.

Yeah, XBMC'll read FAT/FAT32 over USB. But it won't write to drives in those formats, and if the drive is more larger then 4gb it won't touch it. You cannot get around this by creating multiple 4gb partitions.
The X-Box USB ports are the equivalent of v1.1 USB. This translates to "dead slow". A NAS beats them easily, unless you're trying to run it through a hub instead of at least, say, a 10/100mbps switch.
LANs only really slow down if you're running them through hubs. You should only see a performance hit if you're trying to talk to one of the busy devices.

i just bought a 250gb hard drive and i am planning on making it external hard drive for my xbox with a switch. similar to this http://xbox-scene.com/articles/multi-drive.php except a little cleaner with plug-ins in the back, not just the wires hanging out, and with an external hard drive case. my question is this, is there a pc program that will explore a hard drive that is in fatx format? ideally i would like to be able to make .iso files directly from the hard drive as well as plug it into the xbox and use it from there.

If you're running Windows Xp or 2000 I believe yes there is a driver for windows. Evox running off the Xbox however, will allow you to FTP to your PC, and you could navigate the hard drive in the Xbox through Windows Explorer's FTP browser.
As for the ISO's. The DVD-Rom drive will show up as folder D thru the FTP program. So you could construct ISO's from over the network. With only 5 posts I see that your a newbie.
Welcome to the forums, your questions are more valid and make more sence than many of the members with hundreds of posts. I'd recommend just using FTP, it's as useful and more practical than hooking the drive to your PC.

thank you for your reply. i know how to ftp to the xbox and the dvd-rom. the reason that i want to access it from my pc is this way i can still use it for storage of non-xbox files and still have access to them fairly easily. on this external case i plan on makeing it usb compatible as well as IDE for the xbox. do you know the program that will allow me to access it using windows xp pro? also will it support it as USB or should i add an extra female IDE connector in the front of my computer?

It *should* support it as USB through the driver. (assuming the drivers for the IDE>USB adapter support that) Also, I believe it's just a driver for windows rather than a program. Let me see if I could find it.
FatX, though is a pain and only supports file names to 40 characters. I really wouldn't recommend using the drive as a bakup drive on your PC. The fact still remains that it would function the same if you were to have the drive in your Xbox and FTP to it, but I could see where this could still be usful. There should be a way to format the drive with FatX and Window XP's Fat. This would allow both machines to see their own respected partitions, I'm actually debating doing just that for an external drive idea I have.
