Title: Cheapmods In The United States -- $12
Post by: Def on April 14, 2003, 07:19:00 PM
HERE IS HOW I SETUP MY XBOX TO FLASH CHEAPMODS QUICKLY (takes 10 seconds at most to flash a cheapmod w/ xbox compared to 2 minutes w/ a programmer).

I leave my xbox cover unscrewed and harddrive/dvdrom unscrewed as well. I can just pop them off quickly as so.
user posted image

As you can see I used headers to install the chip. In this picture, I pulled off the chip revealing the 2x6 male headers attached to the LPC.
user posted image

Whenever I want to flash my cheapmod, I just insert the cheapmod onto the male headers as so.
user posted image

I tilt the cheapmod a bit to get contact between the points and the headers. I just flash away and pull the chip out and proceed to the next one. Total time of flashing? At most 10 seconds and I'm also able to boot up the chip to test if it's working.

Great pics! ohmy.gif
Is that double-sided sticky tape to hold the chip in place on the headers?
Does it keep the points attached to the headers fairly securely?
Title: Cheapmods In The United States -- $12
Post by: Def on April 14, 2003, 08:25:00 PM
Double sided tape is mainly there to provide a cushion between the underside of the chip and the traces on the motherboard. Don't really need it at all.

Snorky, you use evolution X dashboard to flash the chip. There's a tutorial on it in the tutorial section of xbox-scene.

You should flash them with the Cromwell bios.  I want to buy some.... but I really would like to be able to program them without using another console.  What about a cheap programmer?  However... preflashed with the linux cromwell bios would be the best option.  Also... where are you located?  If I buy some from you... I wanna get idea on how long it will take to reach me.

deadspider, yeah i'm starting to switch over although my supplies of priority boxes are limited. i need to get more of them. i especially try to ship out unassembled chips in boxes since the socket pins can easily get damaged.

can anyone help out sha with that evox.ini command to flash the SST chips? the harddrive that i use to store everything died and i don't have the command handy.

Post by: Def on April 29, 2003, 07:10:00 PM
BTW, I'm trying to obtain that new Cromwell bios that is shipping with the Chameleon. If you don't know what that new bios does, basically it makes it MUCH easier to re-flash the chips. All you do is boot up with the chip that's pre-flashed w/ the new Cromwell bios, then stick in a CD with the bios you want and it automatically reflashes the chip with that bios. It skips the Ozxflash CD. You guys can read more about it on the front page news of xboxscene.

I'll let you guys know when I get the bios.

http://www.ozxchip.c...ash_content.htm   theres everything you need to know.

How to use OzXFlash

Step 1 - Creating the OzXFlash CD
(This step can be avoided by purchasing the OzXFlash CD from this website)

Download the OzXFlash CD from the downloads section of this website and using WinZIP or any compatible extraction tool extract the ozxflashcd.iso file.

Using your CD Burner software burn the ISO image file in UDF format in Disc-at-once mode and ensure the CD is finalized. We recommend ahead Nero.

Your OzXFlash CD should now be ready for use!

Step 2 - Creating the Bios CD

Ensure that the bios file you wish to use is a 256k bios file.

Make a copy of the bios file you wish to use and rename this copy to bios.bin

Burn the bios.bin file onto a CD.
(If you have trouble reading this CD in your XBox
add a file of several megabytes in size to the CD)

 Step 3 - Running OzXFlash

Turn your XBox console ON and then follow the instructions that are displayed on screen.
You will notice that the OzXFlash contains many pauses during its operation, this is by design and is to allow the DVD-Rom drive to mount the CD correctly as the XBox's DVD-Rom drives are very fussy when it comes to media compatibility.

When the flashing procedure is complete the DVD-Rom tray will eject, remove the CD from the tray and the console will shutdown.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All Consoles should have the cover installed when booting Cromwell to ensure air flow is maintained. Boot problems and video fragmentation have been identified when the console heats up if the cover is not fitted!

Theres not much more to say.

Hey guys sorry I haven't been able to answer some of your questions. I know you fellow students can understand. All orders up to right NOW should be on it's way. Please have patience.

And to answer previous questions:

1) I don't sell programmers

2) I sell blank SST chips and yes I have plenty in stock.

I would be interested in knowing as well. Last night I almost got banned from XBOX LIVE. I connected and realized I didn't turn off the switch. Luckily there was a problem w/ my internet connection so it didn't get a chance to succcessfully connect.

I would love to find a way to change the LED on the eject button to be green when it's in normal mode, and RED when it's in mod mod. I know I can add another LED but I'd love to use the existing LED if possible. Anyone?

anyone know the name of the tool used to take out the sst chips? i need one but dont know what they are called. thxn

btw: i know its possible, i just dont know how, someone should check this out, lol. that woul be sweet, but i think it follows the same gist as having a led on when the mod is on.
Title: Cheapmods In The United States -- $12
Post by: alpine455 on May 07, 2003, 02:41:00 PM
It would be very easy to make the eject LED work to indicate the status of the mod chip. But you would lose have those leds indicate the xbox status, or what you normally see now

I dont know anywhere you can read about that. Maybe 1 day I might write a tutorial on it.
You would need a DPDT switch,  2 - 470 ohm resistors, some wire and probably an hours time for the beginner I would guess.

Hey Def....I ordered some blank SST chips a few days ago. Havent recieved an email from you confirming the shipment or that you acknowledge recieving payment. Order came from [email protected]
Also, I asked about your quantity discount and would like that question answered. Is there a discount? If not, why do you list individual quantities in your 1st post?
Title: Cheapmods In The United States -- $12
Post by: Def on May 10, 2003, 08:41:00 AM
Yes I received your payment. I don't respond to every payment confirming payment because I just do not have the time. But please rest assure that if you sent payment, then your order will get to you.

As for the discount on blanks, the reason I have individual quantities listed was because prices used to be $6 or so for 1-5 and I did gave discounts for large orders ($4/ea.) I since have lowered the price on all quantities to the lowest listed price of $4/ea.

Thanks.

I am very interested in getting a cheapmod from you. I am an experienced solder, but I am a bit nervous about soldering in my Xbox.

I know I can handle the LPC points, but d0 is a bit scary. I heard the alternate d0 is a bit bigger, but I really don't want to risk damaging my motherboard from static electricity by handling it when taking it out.

If I can get some money, I will get one, just to have, incase my matrix decides to die on me. First thing I really want is Bunnie's book, but If I get the money soon I will let you know.

Yo, for those of you wondering about how to add a status light for the mod...

Materials:

DPDT Switch
Abit of Kynar wire.

then take a look at this guide for the pinout of the led board http://www.xbox-scen...s/front-led.php use one pole on the switch for the d0 enable/disable and the other pole to turn the individual led's on (you will not be returning them to thier place on the wiring harness like in the tutorial...

You still got complete cheapmods?
Title: Cheapmods In The United States -- $12
Post by: alpine455 on May 12, 2003, 03:59:00 PM
No, you need a double pole switch. the one that has 6 contacts on the bottom, 3 on each side.
Ill do my best to give an example....this is looking at the botom of the switch

 To ground ------> o  o <------  *-----------------------------------------------------*------- LED
 To D0 -----------> o  o <------  -//(470 ohm resistor)/-  [ +5 volts ]              GND------ LED
 N/C -------------> o  o <------  *-----------------------------------------------------*------- LED

Basically, the side the LED connects to. Take the center leg of the LED and connect it to ground.
Take 1 end of the LED`s side legs and connect it to the top contact on the switch.
The the opposite end and connect it to the bottom.
The center pole on the switch is where you want your voltage for the LED. In this case, a 470 ohm resistor with the other    end going to a +5 volt source. ex. the red wire on your HDD connector.

I think that should be fairly simple to follow

You can use a resistor between 330 ohm (LED might burn out quick, not sure) to 1k. 1k will be dim.
I would use 470 or 510 ohm.
If you are connecting it to a +12 volt source, you will have to figure out the resitance yourself.

Ahh I'm still here. Haven't checked e-mails in over a week and haven't had a chance to come here in quite some time. I'm not sure about the other dealers but as mentioned 2 weeks ago, I have been quite busy with the real world. But finally finals are over so I'm glad to say that I'm now fully able to get right back on schedule and turn out orders as quickly as before. Although I can understand your frustration on me not being able to answer e-mails the last week+, please always keep in mind that even large companies get backlogged. Now consider that you are buying from individuals who do this as a side gig, so it's not uncommon for us to get slowed down sometimes for various reasons.

With that said, I'm going to catch up on PMs and my backlogged e-mails. I hope to get through them all right now. For those who placed an order and are long overdue, I promise I will compensate somehow. Thanks again.

He does it coz you can buy all the parts to make one yourself for less than $5

Details of how to build them can be found here.

http://www.warmcat.c...p/cheapmod.html

Theres some PCB diagrams lower down on the page too which you can get made up for next to nothing aswell.

I just wanna say that Def's cheapmods look a hell of a lot more pro than those pics.
If you don't want to be bothered with ordering parts and supplies in bulk, as well as having to construct your own, and want a good quality-made cheapmod, Def is the man.
Great shipping, too.

Hehe more pro than those pics, those pics are the first ever cheapmod, that site is by the guy who invented the cheapmod  tongue.gif

And the intention of my post wasnt to flame, im sorry if it gave that impression. It was just to point out how he can do it so cheaply, and to where you could learn how to build your own, with working PCB diagrams.

But yeah, if you cant be arsed to build your own then buy one  tongue.gif

Yeah, I just wanted to throw that caveat in there, so potential buyers wouldn't think that the chips they get from Def look like the cheapmods in those pics, thats all. cool.gif
Wasn't trying to get into anything, either. wink.gif

£ is more than $ yes because its a stronger currency. But the price of everything is relevant to average wage earnt, standard economics can tell you that.

so now the average joe has to think about standard economics to build a cheapmod? dry.gif  i understand your intentions are good but don't forget to factor time into the equation.

Hehe, naw, i think this is starting to take a turn for the worse, i was mearly trying to point out to some originally how you're able to sell them so cheaply. If you also read what i said, i said something like that if you dont know how or cant be bothered to build one, then buy one. I've also pointed a few people over to this post and the original cheapmod building instructions when they were asking about building or buying mods.

I'm not knocking you or what your doing at all mate, so please dont think thats what im doing.

Simple question for everyone.  I have a Flashed cheapmod working great with pin header installation.  If I do the swap method with a new unflashed chip and after booting into the dungeonx/slayers auto installer cd.  Can I install BIOS if it resides on the CD and HD?
Title: Cheapmods In The United States -- $12
Post by: Def on June 05, 2003, 11:07:00 PM
sha, you sound like u have a similar setup as i do. you can check out the pictures i posted on the first page. just install evox w/ the bios u want on the HD. boot into it with the working chip, then hot swap it with a blank chip. the blank chip does not even need to have female headers. just connect it over the male headers and tilt the chip so there is contact. then flash the chip through evox.

Ya same here  i just ordered and have been downed a lot of 256k bioes ( I assume that the sst chips is 256K only). Now The ozxflash bios cd that i have is for a 256k Executer 4974 and Evox D6. I compared the bios release table and the Executer 4976.02 has only 1 extra ferature as compared to EvoxD6 and the 4974 appears to have the same features as the evoxD6. I see screen shots of Evox but never saw screen shots of the executer bios screens.  I may have got all of this wrong but hey my designation is still a newb  jester.gif  uhh.gif

I received my mod from Def today (FAST shipping) except I did a stupid thing when I ordered it-more of an oversite on my part, but I want to make something clear to anyone else that might be a similar situation:
When you buy it unassembled, Def does _NOT_ program the flash.
I wasn't totally thinking and I purchased it unassembled, with the intent of using it to repair the Xbox I killed the flash on, except I have no way to program it.  I'm debating between building a CheapLPC, or buying another cheapMod (assembled this time)
When I was ordered, I was thinking Def programed them in a flash programmer-I now know he uses an Xbox to do it.
Please understand-I'm NOT blaming Def, I'm happy with what I got-I made a mistake-it's my fault.  I'm just trying to help someone else from making the same mistake I did.

You've quoted US$4 for shipping anywhere in USA, but obviously it'll be more for overseas.

Has anyone tried soldering a header pins onto the mod and then put a header on the board and just plug it in rather than soldering the individual wires?  Seems like to would be easier. beerchug.gif

that works but be careful if you have a samsung drive. those sit lower than other drives and may hit the chip.

My chip took 7 days to arive, I think it is becuase he is in Cali and I am in Maine. For $4 shipping he could at lease give us a tracking #! The chip I got from himm is dead, but it sounds like this is rare. I will post feedback on how he handles me.
