Title: Tell Me What I Ahve Done Wrong
Post by: Henrythewound on February 08, 2006, 10:10:00 AM
Hey all, I have searched through posts and tutorials but I still cannot get my dashboard boot disc to work. Heres what I have tried.

I have an Xecuter 2.6 CE with a successful BIOS installed on the chip, Xecuter2 4983 and 4981 were tried ith the following:

1) DL the latest evolution x dashboard through xbins
2) edit the evox.ini file to allow static IP etc
3) renamed the evoxdash.xbe file to default.xbe
4) created a dummy file of least 100 Mb using either dummyfile or dummy file creator
5) created an ISO of the evox folder using either Craxtion4 or Qwix 1.01
6) burned the ISO using Nero 6 with either "disk-at-once" or "track-at-once" to a Maxell high speed CD-RW

I have tried all the possible combinations above on Memorex CD-R (just to try it) as well as Memorex DVD-R with no luck. I have read about burning at low speed, so I chose the lowest burn speed availabe with whatever media I was using at the time. I did a full erase of the CD-RW each time I tried a new combination of the above variables.

The tutorials I was using are linked below, these were followed to the letter

tut 1
tut 2

one conflicting piece of information I noticed was that tutorial 2 shows burning the disc using "track-at-once" while another ays you must use "disc-at-once". I'm really not sure how big a deal this is as I have tried both with the same result.

When I turn on the xbox w/ chip enabled, I get the flubber animation followed by the xbox logo w/ Xecuter2 in place of the MS logo, the it just sits there. I think it went to the xbox menu after that (where you set the options, look at the files on your HD etc). I don't know when I am supposed to see the evolutionx dashborad come up. If something is obviously wrong with my process please let me know, I am pretty much out of ideas at this point.

Henry

Classic mistake. You have burned the ISO as a data disc. Open nero burning rom select recorder then burn image.

No, I did choose "burn image" from the drop down menu in Nero. It gives an option to burn with either of those 2 methods. I made an iso with the following in the folder

Bios folder
Skin folder
Trainers folder
dummy file called 000.0
default.xbe
evox.ini

I open Nero, close the wizard, and choose "Burn Image" from the recorder menu. I then browse to the ISO I created, choose Write and Finalize CD, choose the lowest burn speed possible, and then the write method (either disc at once or track at once). I think i am doing this right as I cannot read the files on the cd via my pc when I am done. I read this is because the xbox used a diff file format that is not viewable on PCs. I am leaning towards the issue being with my media, but I could be wrong.

Thx for the input,
Henry

Don't create your own boot disc.  That is a VERY old method.  Today, we have the likes of Slayers Evox Autoinstaller and Auto Installer Deluxe.
Download them and burn them as an .iso.  Then, pop them in the Xbox.  No dummy files, no nothing, almost ZERO chance of making a mistake.
Also, try burning at a low speed on Disc at Once and Finalize the disc.

If this does not work, try burning a DVD+R at the slowest speed, Xboxes like DVDs better than they do CD/RWs.

I was shying away from using something like Slayer because my friend has warned me that MANY people have screwed up ther xboxes using it. Considering all the trouble I have been having just getting the chip physically IN my xbox, figuring out how to flash the BIOS etc, I was trying to avoid any potential pitfalls. This has been a learning experience (as it should be) for me, and I liked the idea of editing the .ini file for my personal needs. I may just give the slayer option a go tonight though. Im assuming the iso is large and I only have 56k. Time to mooch from my friends broadband!

Thx for the suggestion

I had my friend help me attempt another boot disc burn with no luck so we downloaded slayers autoinstaller. It booted the first try and we used it to format a larger HD, then FTP'd many programs etc over from my friends xbox to mine. Everything is working fine now, I just need to customize XBMC which I am going to use as my dashboard. I would still like to know why the boot discs I was making did not boot. I was thinking it was the media I was using (even though I tried half a dozen kinds) but now I'm thinking it was something to do with the ISO or burning method. Has anybody followed either of those tutorials I linked with success?

thx,
Henry

I have Nero but never used it for making an iso. I use DVDdecrypter and it works perfect and pretty damn easy to use.

It works everytime I tried it so its something you are doing wrong in the building of the ISO. There really is nothing difficult about this.
A folder on your PC (Lets call it EVO)
Put at least the evoxdash.xbe in it and the evox.ini. You can put all the other stuff if  you want skins etc.
Make sure the evoxdash is renamed default.xbe
Use qwix or craxtion to make an XISO of the EVO folder.
Burn to disc as an image using IMGBURN, Nero, Alcohol 120 etc. Do not burn as a data disc.
If the option to finalise the disc is showing up in nero then you are burning it as data, plain and simple. If you are burning it correctly the option for finalise is greyed out, not accessible. A disc image can not be multisession
