Title: Installing/formatting A New Hd Through Ftp W/ Evox
Post by: jfullam on January 27, 2004, 01:25:00 AM
PLEASE HELP!!!

I am having the same issue as many people have mentioned on this thread... some seem like they solved it, but did not post what they did to solve..

If I pop in my Slayers Evox CD and then start FTP (FlashFXP) from my PC to XBOX I can access the XBOX and "see" all my drives C, D, E, F, G. X, Y, Z...

All directories appear empty (except D of course)... I CAN FTP from D (DVD drive) to my PC.
I CANNOT FTP anything from my PC to the XBOX (File Transfer Failed message).

I have tried formatting using Slayers as well as Formatting all 6 drives using the Raw commands, FTP echos that each drive is formatted,  and I still cannot FTP to the XBOX...

My XBOX was working fine for 3 months, but then somehow got "toasted" when I rented an Oddworld game from Blockbuster, put it in my DVD drive and rebooted the XBOX... I never had any issues FTP'ing to the XBOX before, it does seems to see the drives on the XBOX, but FTP transfers to the XBOX fail... I have used this Slayer installer CD very successfully the first time I orignally loaded my XBOX 3 months ago...I did not have a single problem, it worked great... so I am thinking that either is something screwy with the drive itslef or maybe the bios?

If I could only FTP to the XBOX, I can get the xbox working again...

Please, anyone who has a clue, I would greatly appreciate it...

Here is a guide I wrote for all the people that were asking how to get a new HD in their Xbox, and were complaining about Slayer's AutoInstaller.  I've heard of a lot of problems when using Slayer's, and if you follow this guide, you shouldn't have a single issue!

---

A lot of people have had problems installing new HDs.  Making a custom evox.ini can be confusing, and finding a Xbox HD format app can be hard.  This tutorial shows you how to format a brand new HD with nothing more than a stock version of Evolution-X Dashboard on a CDRW or DVD-R.

First, back up all your files from your C: and E: ( and F: if you had one) drives to your computer.

Install your new HD into the Xbox.  It does NOT need to be formatted or prepared in any way.  Just throw it in there.  Note that most HDs ship with the jumper set to CS (cable select) this works most of the time, you may need to set it to MA (Master).

Burn the EvoX dashboard to a CDRW or DVD-R (no CDRs).  I suggest using the pre-made ISO Dummy images that can be found on the net.  Dummy images are simply ISO images with 500+ MB of "dummy" data to force the EvoX data to the outer rim of the CDRW where it can be read easier.  You might try doing a google search for evolutionx_beta_v1.8.3285-Dummy-Static.rar, or look around IRC.

Launch Evolution-X Dashboard off CDRW/DVD-R.  If you drive doesn't read it the first time, don't give up.  Turn the Xbox off completely while the disk is still in it, and then back on.  If it doesn't boot again, keep trying.  It may take a dozen or more tries.

With Evox Dash booted off CDRW/DVD-R, connect through FlashFXP (Windows) or Transmit (MacOS).

You will now need to send "Raw FTP Commands" with your FTP client.  You may have to hunt through the pull down menus for an option called "send raw FTP command."  Send the following "Raw FTP Command" with your FTP client:

CODE

   Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1

The FTP app will echo a hard drive key (display a long number in the log window [FlashFXP] or a  dialog box [Transmit]).  Use that key for the next command.

CODE

   FormatDrive 'the number'   (no quotes)

Do the same as above for the next few raw commands:

CODE

   Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition2
   FormatDrive 'the number'
   Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition6
   FormatDrive 'the number'

Your drive is now formatted and ready to use.  Partitions X:, Y:, and Z: will be created automagically.

All you need to do now, is get Evox on the HD.  FTP the "default.xbe" from your D: to your computer.  Then rename the file to "evoxdash.xbe" and FTP it back to the C:.  Then copy the "evox.ini" from the D: to your computer and then back to the C:.  Pull your CDRW/DVD-R out, and reboot.

Then you can FTP all your contents of your backed up drive from your computer to the Xbox.

Cheers, Cheule

Edit: fixed backslashes. -gain

Does this mean that you cannot connect via FTP at all? or that you see your files on your C: drive, and somehow cannot get them off?

If you could tell me exactly the steps you've taken, I can better help you.

So you got the key and formatted for drives 1 through 6?  Maybe I should add an addendum.  Oddly enough i just stumbled accross this same problem the other day, but it didn't happen to me before.

If you type double backslashes, it shows 1.

1 backslash:
2 backslashes: \
3 backslashes: \
4 backslashes: \\

etc..

Post by: ninja friend on June 30, 2003, 01:47:00 PM
I've been reading through all of these tutorials, and this seems to be the one most pertinent to what I want to do.

Basically, I had a friend put in an X2.1 Lite for me, since I don't trust myself with a soldering iron. From what I understand, he used the Slayer Disc to put on Evox. I want to replace the HDD, install Evox, and set up everything to my liking (new BIOS, different EVOX setup, etc).

Assuming that I really don't care for the contents of the old HDD, and I just want the files needed to insure normal functionality and a working (and expandable) EVOX, what do I need to backup and then restore to the new HDD? Also, would the renaming of the .xbe files still apply, considering EVOX has already been installed a first time?

Please excuse any idiotic questions... I'm new to this whole thing, but I am doing my best to learn from the tut's and forums... it's just a lot of new new stuff to learn (especially considering the fact that I can kill my 'box completely). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-

Thanks much for the reply- I will try it like that.
It's hard to find basic information sometimes, so thanks for the help.
So if I'm getting this correctly, the C drive is the MS stuff, and the E drive is everything else (Evox, homebrew, apps, etc...) ... does that sound accurate?
Side note: I checked out your BIOS pre-set color mods on your site, but I couldn't d/l them... did you guys hit a bandwidth limit or something?

Thanks again Jake.

From reading all the problems encountered by this "Simple" procedure.. It looks like the answer is SLAYER'S

INSTALLER  afterall.

What were the problems. All I read was .."I figured it out. "  That does not help anyone reading this info.

Wow this method worked perfectly for me. You should also mention to go into the evox.ini file and set use f drive to yes when you're done. Also for clarification in FlashFXP go to Commands -> Raw Command to get the command text box.

Chevy: What they "figured out" was that they did the same method with all partitions 1-6 instead of just 1,2 and 6.

My only problem now is that I get an error 5 code when I boot up with the mod chip off. Any ideas on how to get it back to normal? uhh.gif

Partitions X:, Y:, and Z: will be created automagically.

I have to ask, that I didn't see how X, Y and Z get created automatically/automagically. After formatting the partition 1, 2 and 6 and uploading EvoX onto C, in the 'system settings' menu of EvoX, it shows X, Y and Z has ZERO bytes of free space.
Is this normal?

BTW: what are X, Y and Z for?

Thanks, I figured it out.  Configmagic locked the drive, but it seems it gave a new hd password different than the one I backed up of my original xbox hd.  I guess it's all ok to go on LIVE then?  My MS dash works and everything.

Cheule, when I followed your Method and I Inserted the evox cd I always ended up getting an error on the top left hand corner. Before I followed youre Method I was using Xantiums, on his guide the evox cd had an ini and the xbe and a backup directory. When I put that cd In The screen would be cut diagnolly with a error on the corner. Is something wrong with the actual hdd or the cd. I Burned the cd using nero and I made an iso using SimpleX ISO.

Have a Xecuter 4977 Bios and a WD 80G HDD. Also i think I have a v1 xbox

Scratch my old post.  I ran into some problems while playing Jedi KOTR.  I formatted the rest of the drives (3-5) and that fixed some of my issues.  Now all of my drives display some type of space usage.  Before only 1,2, 6 displayed space usage with the others showing 0.

Cheule , I have a question...  I'm trying to install a 120gb Seagate 7200rpm, and I did everything according to the guide, but when I insert the Evox cd-rw into the drive for some reason it doesn't boot. The cd is burned correctly. I know this because if I put in my old drive I can run Evox off the cd, after going through my Evox and hitting: Launch DVD. Other cds won't run either. I know that in the guide you say to try booting the cd over and over again until it works... well I've been doing this for a long time (prob a couple of hours).  Any help would be appreciated
