Title: Ps3 Doesnt Read Any Discs

If anything Im asking is common knowledge, please forgive my ignorance; Ive never owned or used a PS3 other than now.

A friend of mine asked me to look at his PS3 (40GB). When you insert a game, movie, anything, it doesnt spin up the disc, and nothing shows up on screen (no spinning icon, no loading, no anything). I removed the disc drive cover and I can see a red laser trying to read the game, but I never see a blue laser. Does this mean the laser is bad? Id rather not have him buy a new laser if thats not the problem.

Hi yes the laser should be blue/purple does it read dvd/cds with the red laser ?

No, it doesnt read anything, even when you put in a CD or a DVD movie it still doesnt even try to spin it up

If it matters, it has a KEM-400AAA laser

I have the same problem, my research has found that a new laser assembly will fix it. supposedly the drive does not spin up unless a disc is detected.

Thanks, I have ordered a new laser and I will see if it will fix this problem.

UPDATE:

The replacement KES-400A laser fixed the problem  

It is not normal on dvd drive for the spindle motor not spinning up at all if the laser is faulty
