256 main RAM + 256 VRAM technically does equal 512 RAM.  dry.gif

Can someone explain this a little more clearly?
from what I understand, the PS3 has 256MB dedicated VRAM at 700MHZ and 256MB at 3.2GHZ dedicated to system
while the 360 has a unified 512MB at 700MHZ which can be divided as devs need
so...realistically does a game like GoW running at 720p need to use up more than 256MB for Video?
or do people say unified is better because they could if they wanted to?

also, when they say that GoW is the reason MS decided to go with 512MB Ram do they mean Epic convinced them to unify the ram, or that MS figured other games will run fine with 256MB shared between video and system?

I really have no clue about this stuff please enlighten me if i'm wrong.

edit: just read that the ps3 can actually use RAM dedicated to system for video its just harder to program for??
....more confused.

edit:kage edited my post as you were posting, you're right Vram 700MHZ

the ps3 has 256MB of DDR3 VRAM at 700MHz (well other reports are saying 650MHz) and 256MB XDR memory running at 3.2GHz.

the 360 has a unified 512MHz of 700MHz DDR3.  the developers can split the 512MB however way they choose.  judging by epics comments of GoW not possible on the ps3 i would imagine that GoW uses more the 256MB for textures, but i could be wrong.  any game is possible on any system if you scale it back enough.  just from reading, most developers prefer unified because it offers more flexibility.

epic may have played a role in microsoft's desicion, but the entire development community knew/wanted microsoft to double up the memory in the 360.  If mark reins story is true, then the pic of GoW running on only 256MB of memory may have been the final smack to the head to issue the final answer, but they werent the only factor to consider.

long story short, devs knew 256MB wouldnt be enough and thankfully microsoft listened.

I read a comment a little while back, but I can't seem to recall where.  It said something to the effect that the system memory could be used for graphics as well.

Anybody heard this or have more information on it?

Yes.  But i thought it was the other way around; the cpu could use the 256MB of the video ram, but the GPU is stuck with 256MB.

hmm...maybe it was.  I can't remember much about the comment.

The GPU can use both memories without constraint, where as the CPU has effectively read only capabilities on the GPU memory because of the bandwidth design.

LOL Yeah as soon as I saw that I was like NO it has 256MB GPU and 256MB CPU Yes it does total 512MB but all I saw was 512MB of RAM not TOTAL RAM.  Very misleading to any potential PS3 buyers and a tad fanboyish if I must say so myself..

XDR DRAM. It's a beautiful thing. Running it myself.
256MB of XDR DRAM will move data at 12.5GB/s.
Yeah! Can you fucking believe that?

Well, to have something to compare I like to add to this that
my PC (P4 3.2 GHz) moves data in my DDR2 Memory (2-2-2-5)
at a speed of 6 GB/sec.

The influence of this fast RAM compared to slower
Mem Modules in respect to Gamespeed is not very
relevant.

Having more memory (even slower) is more important
to the games I tested than having very fast but less memory.

I believe the 360 has 8MB of VD? embedded ram as well, so it's not strictly 512MB ram. I could be wrong on that. I just wish PS3 Yellow Dog Linux had the extra 256XDR ram available to it and GFX support.

I don't believe it has ever been published publicly.
