Hi, I just moved to the United States and took my precious xbox 1 with me which has a mod chip. I bought the xbox in Europe, so it is a pal system. I thought it would be working here as well. Since I could charge and work my laptops or charge my cell phones with a converter in the United States. However the xbox does not turn on at all. So I thought I buy a power cord here in the US and still nothing. Can any body help me? I have no experience with electrical issues or pal/ntsc systems issues.

a lot of cellphone and laptop chargers are designed fro 110-240v, so if thats the case you adaptor may just allow it to plug in in the US without actually changing the power thats flowing

for the xbox you will need an actual stepup converter to switch the power from 110v to 220v

alternatively you could pick up a new power supply for the xbox (not just the power cord) they have switchable ones that can be switched back to 220v if you return to europe


ETA: also, since the xbox is PAL you will have to switch the video output to NTSC, this can be done easily using enigma videomode switchdisc, available at the usual places

Just to add to the above:
Check this post from another Forum HERE ,to see if your power supply is the same as shown in the tutorial. It will save you some money if it is the same.
If it is, then do the mod, then use the Enigma Video Switch Disk as instructed by lordvader129.

If you opt to go with the switch method, you can use the voltage selector switch from an old computer PSU. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

Good to see this info folks. On the separate issue of getting a PAL Xbox to work in North America:

1) Won't simply changing the dash settings under Evox work, for example, so that NTSC playback is selected? Is Enigma therefore not needed? And how about Avalaunch: is it a better dash for such video format changes?

2) A related question -- will games copied with used of modded Xbox be region-free? (For me, for example, I'll soon burn my Xbox games on my PAL Xbox -- what about if I wanted to play them in N. America?)

2. Yes. All of my games are PAL, half of my Xboxes are now NTSC (so I could get component video out), but they all play PAL games quite happily.

Cheers for the reply. A few more question-points for clarification -- please excuse 'em:

1) Is Enigmah still needed if I have a copy of my PAL Xbox game here in Europe, and play that same copy in the US, with my same PAL Xbox? (Is the issue therefore about incompatibility between my PAL Xbox and a NTSC TV in the US, and therefore the US TV unable to ably display my copied game?) Or is the whole issue about using Enigmah video selector when I have a PAL Xbox, and wanna play an NTSC game on it?) Sorry for this noob question. Trying to get my head round the issue.

2) Ok, I get the point that you have PAL games burnt, and then get normal playback on your NTSC Xbox/Xboxes. Is that because your NTSC boxes are modded with a chip, or by virtue of Enigmah video selector?

1: its needed to display on an NTSC TV

2: a modded xbox regardless of region will play any game regardless of region, in most cases the xbox determines what format the video is output with (IE an NTSC xbox will output NTSC video, even if you play a PAL game, and vice versa)

1. You only need Enigmah to switch the output of your Xbox between NTSC and PAL. The issue that Enigmah fixes is about the compatibility of NTSC TVs with PAL signals.

2. It's the mod that overcomes the region locking (allowing PAL games on an NTSC box and vice-versa), and it's the same for chipped and softmodded. Enigmah switches the output of the box between NTSC and PAL. The two are essentially unrelated.

Heimdall, thanx mate for all the info and clarification! That really simplifies the issues to me. Much appreciated. I was having a hard time, as a noob, getting my head round the PAL-NTSC issue.

At the mo, searching for that free Enigmah download. Seems to be available at VIP sites, but for a fee, in my Googling so far. Will see if I can locate it from some place else.

It's available in the usual places. It's also on AID, and possibly on Slayers as well - I'm not at home at the moment, so can't check...... but I remember it's called something like Video Mode Switcher or PAL-NTSC rather than Enigmah

You'll get hold of AID and Slayers via Google.
