If true, it's interesting. Could possibly lead for PS3 backups to be loaded?

From what I understand (though I can't test it) is that it only works on the Japanese models (as you all already know) that support PS2 backwards compatibility.  Hopefully it gets ported over for us North American owners.  I have a 60 giger that I'd love to have running some of my older games on.  Champions of Norrath here I come again!

I thought they took backward compatibility out of all PAL PS3? The article says there is a PAL version on the way so maybe there is hope for all of us with 40GB

they used to sell the 60GB in PAL regions though, i have one and that plays PS2 games

Yeah, which is pointless for me, having a 80gb. I still have a modded PS2 so I'm fine with backups on there.

is it possible this will help get psone backups working from the hdd? I never got into the ps2 but I still have a load of psone games,  my ps3 isnt ps2 backwards compatable though.

 I'd LOVE to have an iso loader that I could use to backup my PSX library, too. Many of the game I have are collectors editions (I miss Working Designs...), and I don't like taking them out the cases anymore (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

 Plus, with games like Xenogears (available on the Japanese marketplace, but nowhere in english (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ) that are multi-disc, I wouldn't have to change them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

 One day...

I didn't even think about the PSX games. That would indeed be pretty nice.
I also have a 80GB PS3 without PS2 backward compatibility.

how about the region code? will a NTSC/US ps2 game works for NTSC/J ps3 console?

btw i have a 20gb NTSC/J model

Here is some more information for those who don't want to look off site too much.

Rumor has it that this doesn't work on the 2.6 firmware version.

F.A.Q
Q: Does this work on PAL PS3's?
A: No, support for PAL is expected to be released soon. (does not work on ANY pal systems at the moment).

Q: But my PS3 is backwards compatible, why doesn't this work?
A: It does not work with SOFTWARE EMULATION (which is what your PS3 most likely has). If its not a "launch unit" it will NOT WORK RIGHT NOW.

Q: How do I know if my unit is a LAUNCH UNIT?
A: Check model number on back of PS3, if it is a launch unit it will be one of the follow: CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHD

Q: Does this work on NTSC PS3's?
A: Yes - launch units only.

Q: What PS3's can use this method of PS3's?
A: Basically USA and Japenese Launch Consoles (20/60gb) that contain the Emotion Engine (PS3 Models CECHA, CECHB, CECHC, CECHD)

Q: Will it work on a PS3 with no Emotion Engine?
A: No not yet.

Q: Does this boot from PS3 internal HDD?
A: No you need a external.

Q: What version of SWAP MAGIC do I need?
A: 3.6+ or 3.8

Q: Swap Magic cant see my USB for somereason
A: It is probably not compatible, buy another one.

Right on. This works with my launch machine, but when using the PSP as my usb device, it is SLOW. Will transfer rates in crease if I use a normal external HDD or a thumb drive?

I can confirm this works on launch ps3 to. It is sweet. hopefully they can get it to work for ps3 backups.

i hope so to, i hope that ps3 games can be booted soon, hope that this discovery will provide more insight. it sucks that the ps3 60 gb versions are the only ones capable of booting ps2, i hate sony for doing that!

the 160GB model does not have ps2 compatability, so this won't help you no matter what.

as hard as purchasing swapmagic 3.6+ or 3.8
(not the last coder version)

Alot of the games I own wont even work from the hdd like shadow of collossus and God of war. Not worth the money if you ask me or the time.
