In lieu of firmware 2.17 release, RichB93 has made a excellent guide to tell you how to bypass the firmware check so you can actually login to PSN on lower firmwares. (<2.17).

We have had confirmation of people being able to connect to PSN on any firmware lower than 2.17

Take a look at his guide HERE for those interested.

Why would you want to do that? Surely it would be more stable on a new firmware?

If I wanted lower firmware I certainly wouldn't go on PSN.

I second the motion.  Whats the big deal with not updating?  What can I do with 2.10 and not 2.17?

could be for people who want to keep a lower firmware on the slim chance something comes out letting them pirate games, but still want to log into PSN

I was going to mention the same thing.  But I would imagine that once a programmer at Sony get wind of this, they'll add some server side check to see what version you're running, then either force you to update if you want to log into PSN or logout if you decline to update.  Wewwwww, nice long run on sentence there with a smidge of sweet alliteration.

You think burning Blu-Ray is cheap? A Blu-Ray burning drive is almost the cost of a PS3, you could get a ton of games with that.

I just think your getting less features messing around like that, and Sony said ages ago they could set-up a system like MS to get you banned.

the price of a BR writer means nothing if you can run games off of the HDD like the xbox.
