PS3 NAND Dump Extractor for Infectus Chip
Posted by XanTium | 1-1-2008 0:26 EST

A tool has been released on ps3hax.net to read the PS3 NAND chip with the Infectus chip:
Quote

This tool is used to interleave, then byteswaps both dumps of the PS3 NAND.
Upon completion, it creates a 'user readable' file.

This file is then scanned by the tool, and the flash files are extracted to a folder.
This folder is named PS3Nand-XXX.XXXX, where XXX.XXXX is the SDK Version magic in the flash (usually the version number of the firmware)

.B .A usually works, however in some cases .A .B order is required.
The tool was made by mainman, assisted by the PS3News.com Developers!

May I ask what the purpose is of this and what it does?

Installing Infectus on PS3 is not a beginner task...

But once it's done, you may (theoretically) upgrade downgrade firmware at will. But you have to keep older firmwares dump made by yourself.

What this thing brings is the knowledge of the encryption mechanism.
So it may lead later, to the ability to downgrade to older firmware you never had on your ps3... Many hacks become possible with this new knowledge. Note it's possible that another encryption level is still needed to decrypt the individual .self files. But I believe the first encryption level was annoying because it was specific to each ps3.
It's possible the next levels are not specific to each ps3 whick makes things easier... But I'm not specialist, I may be wrong.

EDIT: code is very short so I doubt it does the machine specific decryption

So we got a chip taht hasn't been tested to downgrade the firmware or upgrade it to an exploitable version. lol.

Go figure.
