Title: Tutorial : Recipe To Create Lxhdm
Post by: ldotsfan on June 28, 2008, 08:54:00 AM
What you need:

Software:
1. Frosty's xbox rescue disc (from usual place)
2. Kingroach Ndure 3.1 (usual place)
3. msdash 5960 (From Slayer's or CASH 1.1 or your own backup from C drive)
4. Any xiso tool. I use qwix.
5. ConfigMagic latest version (usual place)

Hardware:
A power source for IDE hdd. I used the power connector from my USB IDE enclosure/adapter.

Preparation Steps:
1. Extract Frosty's iso to a folder. I name it lxhdm.
2. Delete root.xbe from lxhdm folder.
3. From Kingroach Ndure's E folder's ndts folder, copy unleashx.xbe to lxhdm folder and rename it as root.xbe
4. Copy config.xml to lxhdm folder.

The execution steps to do the actual hdd upgrade:

1. Eject dvd tray and insert lxhdm dvd. Power off.
2. Connect hdd IDE to new hdd. Supply power to new hdd.
3. Power on xbox. You will get an error 5 which is expected.
4. Unplug hdd IDE cable but keep external power to new hdd on
5. power off xbox and connect hdd IDE cable back to old hdd.
6. power on, after a while lxhdm dvd will load.
7. when unleashX is loaded, unplug hdd IDE cable from old hdd and plug it to new hdd.
8. Select relaunch option in unleashX menu.
9. After unleashX is relaunched, select Prepare HD menu option. Copying of files will take a while. especially for bigger files like shadowC.img.
10. Use file manager for steps 11-13 onwards.
11. Go to C drive and delete evoxdash.xbe
12. Go to C drive's xodash folder. Copy D drive's ndure folder's ernie.xtf over.
13. Copy D drive's ndure folder's xbox.xtf to C drive's xodash folder.
14. Finally select Lock Hard Drive menu option in unleashX to launch configmagic.
15. Use Start button to lock hard drive.
16. Reboot to enjoy your new hdd.

Some of these steps can probably be scripted after somebody verifies they work for them too.

Make sure you are comfortable with making a bootable xiso dvd before you attempt any of this.

Try the original Frosty's disc and see if that boots. So you're saying your dvd media you used has worked in the past and the way you created and burned the xiso disc has worked as well, right?

Ya I tried burning frosty's rescue disc and does the same thing , ya I have made xiso's in the past with qwix one I can recall was deleting some files from a ghost recon 2 disc and recreating the iso.

Am I doing something wrong , all I do is select create ISO , select local folder and select the lxhdm folder and create iso , then burn using imgburn...again any help very appreciated...

It could the media you used. Try dvd-r (that's minus sign) or cdrw.

Ok I got frosty's disc to load using a different brand dvd-r , lxhdm disc still won't work burned on that dvd-r...

I think my problem may lie in...

7. In CDrive, place the files in this order.
a. msdash 5960 files
b. kingroach ndure's C folder files.

I'm not really sure if I copied it from the right place on slayer's disc , I copied it from Slayers\SYSTEM\ALL\c ...Just took all the files in that folder and copied them..Is that where I should have gotten the files from?

1. Size of lxhdm folder?
2. You can skip 7a if you want to just boot to unleashX and don't need dual-boot stuff.
3. The folder you mentioned on Slayer's should be correct though.

I just copied the code you posted and made it config.xml since the config.xml inside Ndure 3.1 e/ndts is completely different..?

Can you list the contents of lxhdm folder?

Looks alright, did you do step 2? What's the file sizes of default.xbe and root.xbe? They should be different. I realized the wording of step 2 might be misleading. I actually intended that ndts' default.xbe become lxhdm's root.xbe , if you follow what I mean.

For some reason the default.xbe from frosty's rescue disc and the default.xbe from ndure\E\ndts later renamed to root.xbe are both 22kb?

What I did was first copy it from ndure\E\ndts and paste it into a different folder other than lxhdm and rename to root.xbe and then finally past it in lxhdm or it would have overwritten the default.xbe that was already in lxhdm (from extracting frosty's rescue disc)...So somehow I ended up with them both being the same size..just tried it a 2nd time with same results...

They should be different sizes. Restore the copy from Frosty's xiso. root.xbe should be unleashX. default.xbe of lxhdm should be the same one from Frosty's. This is the PBL xbe.

Ya that was the problem , should have noticed it. Need to either take DEFAULT.xbe from Ndure/E/Dash folder or Unleashx.xbe from NDURE/E/NDTS folder and rename it to root.xbe then copy and paste into the LXHDM folder. For some reason its freezing on me while copying files though , perhaps it was a bad burn or the hard drive I was using was shot. Either way got it working , thnx again for the patients lol  biggrin.gif

Would I be able to just create an original un-modded HDD using this method? I'd rather have an un-modified large HDD, then soft-mod it and put everything on it. Is this possible?

Yes, of course. It just comes down to what files you put on the new hdd. If it's retail msdash files, it will boot to retail state. If it's softmod files, it will boot to modded state.

The boot disc by itself can also be used like a CASH 1.1 like boot disc - used for softmod upgrades.

How does this work on a "softmodded" xbox...?

How is the softmod able to boot a disc with no chip installed..?

Am I missing something here..?

this is not true cold booting, xman954 gave an explanation once:
1 retail kernel
2 not a valid xbox disc
3 exploited msdash
4 font exploit
5 nkpatcher
6 dvd default.xbe

1. Re-read the rest of the thread - media problems. Does the dvd-r media you used worked for you in the past?
2. Try if Frosty's xbox rescue disc boots.

Im doing this right now, and i'm at the filemanager step.

It seems that the only thing in my c drive is xboxdash.xbe
all these other files talked about in the first posts are in the D drive and actually,

D/C/ndure and D/C/... etc. Should I copy over the contents of D/C/ to just C/ and then continue this?

Yes you should copy over the files from DVD to C and E drives of hdd.
But which version of the xml file did you use? first post or the corrected one later?

I used the one from the first post. So now I have the right one from the 2nd page.

Anyway im going to make a new dvd to fix that, and I noticed that in my dash download (ms-dash-mik3h) There are 2 copies of xbox.xtf and xbox book.xtf. One set of these files is in C/ and the other set of these 2 files is in C/Fonts/  and since together their like 30mb, it is just over the amount of space on C after I format.

So which ones of these are the correct ones and which should I delete?

Oh and I tried going throguh with this stuff yesterday and ended up finishing, but it doesnt work so Ill do it again. But i locked my hard drive with config magic. Is this going to cause me any trouble or do I need to do something to unlock it first?

1. I've checked against Bomb Bloke's list of msdash file listing: http://pastebin.com/f50eae434
The twin copies of xbox.xtf/xbox book.xtf look correct.

2. Did you prepare the 2 zip files as specified in the second config.xml post? The instructions differ from the first post if you didn't realize.

3. If new hdd is already locked, you need to hotswap this hdd with DVD IDE cable disconnect/Error 12 method. It won't boot to error 5 anymore as in the original instructions. After that, maintain power through the external source to keep it unlocked until the boot disc boots via the old hdd then connect the IDE cable over.

Just to add, because you said you already formatted the new hdd and locked it. Another possibility arises: you can now hotswap it to xplorer360 running on Windows. That will allow you to correct dash related problems, as you already have a good copy of msdash ver 5960 used to create the lxhdm xiso. Kingroach Ndure will also create the softmod files on PC for you to softmod the new hdd. Just ensure ernie.xtf is copied before xbox.xtf in xodash folder to the hdd. Partition 3 is C drive, partition 4 is E drive in xplorer360.

In other words, you don't have to use lxhdm anymore. Its main job is to format the 5 stock partitions and lock the new hdd. Dash files/softmod files can be installed through other means.

ok i guess this is a dumb question but how do i use xplorer 360?

the only thing ive tried is plugging in the xbox drive to an external usb shell and windows wont detect it. this thing didnt come with directions

You'll need to hotswap so read the art of hotswapping. No other special instructions needed except that partition 3 is C drive, partition 4 is E drive.  Partitions 0-2 don't matter for what you want to do. You are just exchanging the software tool inside the tutorial from xboxhdm to xplorer360 which runs in Windows. Power to the xbox hdd should be supplied throughout the process to keep it temporarily unlocked.

Update to the post above.

Simply removing the files to the Ndure folder that was made to copy shit over fixed the problem.

Also since they were just audio files for Xbox live, a service I never planned on using, I did not even bother coping them over.

This process was simple, mostly painless and the only thing that worked for me. A gold star for you.

I have the following menus

You copied the wrong config.xml (which you took from ndts) over to the dvd. I hope you didn't miss anything else out in the instructions.

Is yours a blank new hdd or you are low on DVD-Rs? Relaunching d:\root.xbe through the file manager in your current menu should still work and for the locking you need to navigate to the correct ConfigMagic folder to launch default.xbe

Otherwise remaster the iso with the correct config.xml (from post#1)

Rename CDrive at step 5 to something else , say msdash and manually copy it at execution step 10.

I see mixed results for WD 800 in the list - so you have to repeat the procedure on another hdd.
