A couple of this you need to know

You need the right equipment to install a new cpu and if its a 1.4ghz you need a speacial socket made up that i recall being needed. You need i think a BGA rework station to install a new 1ghz cpu and a BGA rework station and an adapter socket to fit a 1.4ghz

The xbox will only work with 128mb or ram, Meaning that you need another 4 ( 4 i think) chips of ram, that are for the xbox that come of another xbox. I also recall a moderator i think saying that some old geforce4 graphics cards had the same ram that would work.  Desodlering the ram and then soldering it on is another challange.

I am pretty sure all of this is right! anyone finds faults with it please correct, also apologies for spelling and grammer if there is anything wrong as i woke just 15 mins ago  biggrin.gif

Ok, thats only one of the many things you need. Do you have an adapter ? do you have the tools to install the new/remove the old ?

Does it work ?

Once the new RAM is installed, you also need to switch to a BIOS type that supports the extra amount. I'm not sure if this is true for a CPU upgrade.

nick14, please do proove me wrong and produce some goods because this thread is stupid, if you had the ability to do this correctly, you should easily have the knowledge to answer these noob questions.

LOL so you got the CPU from a PC and just 'installed it'?

Sure you did..

I for one would like to see some pictures of your upgrade.

Upgrading to ANY different CPU is a real challenge, even the 1GHZ chips require modification to the board.

The 1.4GHZ, was a celeron type chip aswell if i remember correctly.

Both of which were mobile chips, so one from a PC is a big no no, for one thing its about twice the size of a mobile chip, have you even had the heatsink of your CPU and had a look?

The fact you said its got 256MB RAM does it for me.

Oh and incase you really want to see some work, heres a couple of shots i did while attempting a 1GHZ CPU upgrade a long time ago, still never did finish off the work and get it sorted.

As you can see, not really just something you can do at your dining room table and does indeed require GBA rework facilities.

EDIT: Kirky, yes you can indeed get some of the older Geforce cards and remove their RAM chips, if memory serves they are around the Geforce 2 time. 4x16MB chips.

And bomb_bloke, you don't need a special BIOS to run a different CPU providing the pin out of the CPU matched correctly to the motherboard, in such a case it wouldn't work.

Pictures of the new processor fitted?

Also, a link to the tutorial?  happy.gif

And, what code is the processor?

Although, I'm not really sure what the intent of this thread is but good news for peeps who want to experiment with an original Xbox upgraded to fit any 370-pin Intel processor.

I've originally posted progress on the XboxHacker BBS. It's basically a PCB that you can solder directly over the Xbox's mainboard ball grid array (BGA) mobile processor socket (or whatever you call it tongue.gif) without the need of a BGA [re]work/reball station. Now, I'm in the process of getting a prototype fabricated.

Enough with the details for now. This post can deserve a thread of its own. laugh.gif
But, for this "topic", this will probably help your "question." dry.gif

phrasius in that thread reckons XBMC doesn't use the extra CPU power... Now, I haven't tried such an upgrade myself (doubt I'll ever get enough spare time/money/boredom), but I'm pretty sure that's just not true. At one point support was specifically built in, and FriendTech even donated a DreamX to Team XBMC so they could test it out.

Sure, I gather the benefits are slim, but they are at least existant.
