Reuse old parts to reduce cost. I used parts from an old IDE cable and serial cable. Anyway I didn't own a soldering iron and the breadboard was cheaper than a soldering iron in my local hardware shop (and my soldering skills suck anyway).
Yes they really work, but a lot depends on the PC's serial port that you are using. obcd will be able to explain it better. Something to do with the voltage levels of the RS232 port: mark and space thing if I understood him right.

Hmm what all did u use? I have a solder iron gun soo thats not the problem. I have a IDE cable i can use also. And i also have some old pc parts i can use
But idk wat i need and dont need

But idk wat i need and dont need You need 2 resistors, 2 zener diodes, and a DB-9 female connector. I presume you already saw unicron's diagrams. The old serial cable was to recycle the DB-9 connector. The IDE cable was to recycle the wiring. If you want to cut down on the cost of the PCB/breadboard, you could solder the correct parts and short them together assuming you are good with the soldering iron like what this guy did: http://mail.exis.net...kus/item_77.htm.
I'm bad with the iron so I had to use the breadboard as an easy way to connect the parts together. A multimeter is useful to have to check continuity. btw zener direction (orientation of the dark strip) matters.

But i dont get how everything is wired up using the mint can. Is there a digram anywhere?
